It might be important to point out that this is probably the 1st edition. When I purchased the book from Redwing many months ago, I was informed the 1st edition was defective in that it had errors in the glossary: the Chinese characters had been mixed up such that they did not correctly match the pinyin. They were selling the 1st edition for the reduced price of about what this website is advertising(i copied the buy.com listing below). And they included the corrected glossary pages, as they appear in the subsequent edition, which you can then insert into the book yourself. So you might want to call Redwing (or Paradigm)to see if they still have that offer, and also ask if they can tell you if other distributors will be including the pages of errata. If anyone owns the 2nd edition, perhaps they can check to see if the isbn # is different. The isbn # below matches the number in my 1998 edition.

Just a caveat emptor.

Thanks Ann

but I do not think this is the case. I have a 2nd edition with the

same ISBN number. this price is 30% off retail. since buy.com gets a

40% wholesaler discount, they can afford to sell at this price and

still make a small profit.

BTW, I wouldn't normally promote an item for sale on the list, but we

frequently refer to this book and many are unable to afford it at list

price. I make no money on this item and this is not an invitation for

other list members to promote their own business products for sale.

thanks.

hmmm, that's odd. With the same isbn number how can we then differentiate

between the former text, with the incorrect glossary, and the later,

repaired one?

My 2nd edition is also from 1998. Is yours the first edition with the

incorrect glossary. I am sure bob felt will explain this to us when he

has a chance.

Yes, mine is from 1998, clearly marked 'first edition'. It seems they

noticed the mistake not long after printing. So that's how i got my

discount. (but they supplied the added corrected pages, as i said). The

publishing biz is weird when it comes to this isbn bidness. i was under the

impression the # was used to designate editions, among other things. But

what do i know?

And Heiko, no, i didn't get disconnected when i went to the site.
