breast discharge

Most galactogues will probably stimulate prolactin- dandelion, fennel,

fenugreek, aniseseed, cumin, nigella, milk thistle or vervain leaf,

Guiness, beer, malta or freshly juiced carrot juice.

Anti-gluten effects may sometimes trigger systemic effects including

milky breast discharge. Celiacs have around a 25% rate of elevated

prolactin according to several Medline studies I once read. Does she use

flour, seitan or the like?

And have her screened for pituitary and spinal cord tumors,

hypothyroidism, and epilepsy as well as prolactin and associated hormone

levels. Bone loss is often a problem for women with elevated prolactin

and she may need screening for that as well.

Other possibilities which can cause hyperprolactinemia include prolonged

high stress levels, athletic training, prolonged breast stimulation (Deer

massage to stop the menses?), and side effects of drugs including

phenothiazine tranquilizers, Serenace or other dopamine-depleting drugs,

Pepcidine, Tagamet, Tazac, Zantac, Aldactone, Aldomet, birth control

pills, opiates, cocaine and alcohol.

VItex (but not necessarily man jing zi) and saw palmetto berries are both

good for elevated prolactin levels. Sage leaf (but probably not Dan

shen) usually helps dry up milk production.

I don't think my response to this topic came through. Please forgive if this

is repetitive. the most important herb in the Chinese pharmacopoeia is Mai

Ya- used retrain lactation. use in large- 30 gms daily- dosages to help

lower prolactin levels. In concert w/ herb formulas, I've had good success

w/ this strategy.

a heated castor oil pack on the back (behind the breasts) may be useful (it

can stop lactation). though it would probably be useful to simultaneously

administer some draining herbs internally... pu gong ying, da huang, etc.

(these two both enter the stomach and liver channels).

just an idea.
