People use the internet mostly for email and to find information (and

for shopping and entertainment, of course). A web presence makes it easy

for new patients to find you and get information about your services.

Ensure that you have a healthy internet presence three ways; develop a

website, social media, and be sure you are listed in one (or more) of

the public acupuncture practitioner directories.

Website • The cost of hiring a design firm to develop a custom

website is prohibitive for most independent practitioners and small

clinics. Fortunately, there are affordable ways to have a website. A

Google search for " free websites " will return thousands of

options. Many offer paid upgrades to better services (e.g., to be ad

free). If you choose to setup a free site be sure you understand all of

the limitations and restrictions (read the fine print). Also, be

prepared to do some work. After you spend time writing, gathering and

preparing images and other files (e.g., PDFs), you will discover why

professionals are paid for this sort of thing. So expect to spend some

time dealing with setting up and maintaining your website. Once your

website is set up, do not be disappointed if it does not generate much

traffic (visitors). You will discover that people rarely visit (unless

you tell them specifically to download your " new patient forms, "

or to get directions). Most people prefer internet activities that are

more fun. TIP: If you want to minimize the amount of time and money you

spend, yet still have a functional web presence (i.e., meets your basic

Social Media. • You can create a FREE account with various social

media sites (e.g., Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc.). A blog is

a type of website that you can edit yourself. Blogs are typically used

to provide timely news and event information, so you don't need to

spend a lot of development time like you do developing a full-fledged

website. We recommend you use Google, or Wordpress, because they are

established companies, and provide an excellent product (and they are

both free). Social media offers you a medium that is ideal for more

immediate expression and interaction, also it will enhance your internet

presence, which improves your search ranking.

y Listing • Be sure you are listed in an online

acupuncture practitioner directory. There are several directories that

offer free listings, such as NCCAOM, AcuFinder, Acupuncturedirectory.net

and OMclinic.org. There also are paid options that have more features.

Decide what is best for you. The important thing is to be listed in at

least one directory because, like a blog and a website, it will improve

your internet presence, making it easier for potential patients to find

you.
