Marseille and Chana

Hi Richard,

Information forwarded to Marseilles. Thanks!

As far as Chana is concerned. Initial results have not been especially

promising. In her formula I started using 30g Bai Shao Yao and 10g Zhi Gan

Cao, but didn't see any reduction to tremors or spasms. I will tell you,

though, the following week I changed the way that I gave her Magnesium, and that

was immediately beneficial: instead of giving her a gram of Magnesium citrate

TID, I started giving her Mag Cit, only with her second dose of herbs, and

Magnesium Glycinate with her 1st and 3rd doses. My thinking was that the Amino

Acid Glycine has a direct effect on the peripheral nervous system, (as opposed

to GABA which more directly affects the CNS), and my hunch has been born out:

immediately her pain and spasms became less. I have continued the Mag Cit. once

daily, to keep her regular.

As far as Mai Men Dong and Ban Xia, in the first batch, when I used 70 grams of

MMD and 10 grams of Ban Xia, her symptoms worsened, she had an increase in

tremors and spasms, her body temperature got very hot, she had difficulty

sleeping and had a seizure. So since then I cut back the Mai Men Dong to 42g

and the Ban Xia to 6g. (I also cut out Yuan Zhi), and so far she's doing

gradually better, though not miraculously so.

I want to point out one other observation, that I think needs clarification.

Though I have referred to what accompanies the seizures as thick, clear phlegm,

I believe that that is incorrect. Rather, IMO it is saliva, which accumulates

in her throat and which drools out. I think that this is an important point

which should not be glossed over. Clearly, the mechanism of swallowing has

been compromised. And though drooling of saliva or sputum is generally

identified as a symptom of Spleen Qi Xu, clearly there appears to be more of a

Lung Qi and Yin Xu here, which is supported by her short red tongue, the

softness of her voice and her difficulty articulating. What is interesting,

though, is that the other typical symptoms of Lu Qi and Yin Xu are not

there--her Wei Qi is fine, she never gets colds and she generally doesn't sweat

in the daytime. And then there is this saliva, even though her tongue is short,

red and without coating. Again, I would

emphasize that besides the typical Lu Qi Xu symptoms, such as low voice and

lack of desire to speak (well not really-- she WANTS to talk and love's to

engage, but is very hard to understand as it is hard for her to move her

mouth!), her main symptom is the difficulty in moving her throat, which

contributes to her speech difficulty and the accumulation of saliva in her mouth

and throat. Before you suggest, yes, I have integrated into her formula

modified forms of both Bu Fei Tang and Sheng Mai Tang, and have added Jie Geng

as an envoy to the throat. (Maybe it too, is too drying?)

Getting back to the Mai Men Dong/Ban Xia--Even though, as I mentioned at a lower

ratio of them she is doing better, as the shaking and drooling are not

improving, I am thinking to eliminate Ban Xia again, as I think that even a

small dose is damaging her Lung Yin.

As always your comments are appreciated.

Re: referral needed in Marseille, France

Yehuda

Understood. Already sent an e-mail to a mutual friend of Dr Requena's.

I'll reply as soon as I hear back.

By the way......any feedback on Wu Laoshi's comments for Chana?

If you wouldn't mind, Richard. This patient is not terribly motivated and

whatever ease we can provide would be appreciated.

Much thanks,
