Guest guest
Hi wondered if anyone could help with this: Male 52, fairly fit, total sperm count borderline low, poor motility. Some prostate issues that are responding to treatment and previous low back issues e.g. injuries, sciatica, referred pain into groin area. Looking to enhance using TCM herbs and formulas specific to enhancing the sperm situation. Any suggestions from experience? Including nutritional tips? Thanks in advance, Lorraine Lorraine Hodgkinson MNIMH MRCHM HERBS AND HELPERS 6, Butts Fold, Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 9HY. UK. Guest guest
Lorraine, I have used the formula, modified to fit the patients pattern, that Jane Lyttleton gives in her book Treatment of Infertility with , for poor sperm number, motility and morphology. It is important that you advise your patient that sperm take about 60 days to completely form, and any herbal formula used needs to be taken for at least that long for results to be significant. Hope this helps. Hope this helps. Douglas Lyttleton's formula for oligospermia was Bushen Yijing Fang: Bushen Yijing Fang (Tone KI + Nourish Jing-Sperm Formula) [ http://tinyurl.com/yl3lufy + http://tinyurl.com/ye4kffn ]; Tusizi 20g, Heshouwu 15g, Roucongrong 15g, Shudi 15g, Gouqizi 12g, Danshen 12g, Danpi 12g, Yinyanghuo 12g, Bajitian 12g, Suoyang 12g, Shanzhuyu 12g, Fupenzi 12g, Nuzhenzi 12g, Taoren 6g, Honghua 6g, HAIMA 6g, Gejie 6g, Lujiaojiao 10g, Shanyao 10g, Guibanjiao 10g; make Dec + take warm for 3 months / Tx course; Actions: Tone KI + Erect Yang; Tone KI + Nourish Jing-Sperm; promote Jing-sperm Transformation Fx; improve sperm quality, increase sperm density, increase sperm motility, strengthen sperm capacity to impregnate; Nourish Yin + Replenish Jing-sperm; Move Xue + Dispel Xueyu; Antiageing; Antiosteoporosis; increase bone density; normalise senile osteoporosis, normalise bone resorption index; Indications: KI Xu w impotence; infertility~ male dt oligospermia~ severe, all sperm wo vigour / non-motile, ageing~ premature; osteoporosis; dizziness + dazzling spells; COMBOS: to Clear + Drain Damp Heat in LV-GB Damp Heat Pattern w Heat Harrassing Jing-Sperm Room [face red + easily excited, mouth dry + bitter, bilateral rib-side dull pain, urinary retention + dribbling + difficulty; tongue slightly red w Fur yellow + thick; Pulse Tight (String-like) + Slippery], Formula is combined w Longdan Xiegan Tang + Bixie Fenqing Yin; Bushen Yijing Wan, has some herbs [Fupenzi, Nuzhenzi, Roucongrong, Shudi + Tusizi] in common w Bushen Yijing Fang: Bushen Yijing Wan (Tone KI + Nourish Jing-Sperm Pill) http://tinyurl.com/yz2lr8f Tusizi (Jiuzhi) 300g, Nuzhenzi 150g, Fupenzi 150g, Shudi 150g, Sangzhen (Hei) 150g, Roucongrong (Jiuzhi) 150g, Wuweizi (Cuzhi) 150g, Mohanlian 150g; take 6g / time, BID; Actions: Tone KI + Nourish Jing; Enrich KI + Replenish Jing-sperm; Tone Marrow + Nourish Xue; Indications: KI Jing Insufficiency, dizziness + dazzling spells, loin + knees ache + limpness, emission~ night w dream emission; CI in cases w Wind Damage (prone to colds) / Ganmao As well as herbal Tx, consider acupuncture. See: http://homepage.eircom.net/~progers/gu3c.htm Because it can take 2-3 months for sperm quality to improve maximally, the man should be advised to: (1) Wear clothes / LOOSE underpants that allow the scrotum / testes to fall away from the groin. Reduction of testis temperature by a few degrees centigrade can improve sperm count and quality. See: http://tinyurl.com/ybnwnhh (2) Avoid, or severely limit Jing-sperm loss during the course of treatment, except near the female partner's ovulation. Frequent ejaculation during treatment delays restoration of maximal sperm quality. Periodic abstinence improves sperm quality. Restricting ejaculation / coitus to 1-2 days around ovulation in the female partner increases the probability of impregnation. Guest guest
Have enjoyed the posts on this subject. Oct 2009 issue of Fertility & Sterility had an article on prospective, randomized placebo-controlled study for low motility, low sperm count using acupuncture (Dieterle et al). Six of the following points were chosen: ST 36, SP 6, KI 3, LR 3, BL 23, BL 32, St 29, SP 10, CV 4. Treatment was twice weekly for 6 weeks - 45 minute retention with manual stimulation to de qi q. 10 min. There was significant effect on total motile sperm, that was not found with placebo. It was a small sample size, 24 patients in the acupuncture group and 28 in the placebo, and they were not treated according to TCM differentiation, but it is an interesting well designed start. Phil, thanks for the link to your website-- stunning and helpful. Intend to refer a lot of US students to it. Valerie Hobbs, L.Ac. Guest guest
So I know this may be a stupid question. Would that be an hour and a half total treatment time to treat both sides or would you treat one side one day and the other the other day of the week. I have a patient with low motility so this would be perfect for him. Thank you, Petra --- On Thu, 12/3/09, ValerieH <hobbs.valeriehobbs wrote: ValerieH <hobbs.valeriehobbs Re: Sperm counts and motility Chinese Medicine Thursday, December 3, 2009, 9:47 AM  Have enjoyed the posts on this subject.
