Guest guest
Dear colleague, I am learning about the treatment of epilepsy. Does anybody have any experience and have treated this illness successfully? Please help. I have a girlfriend who has had this epilepsy since she was 18 yrs old. Probably she had drunk too much alcohol, but no more drinking. She has been under medication for years, but the attacks were less but not that much. A few minutes before the seizure attacks, she always has an aura " a warning " , a pulsating, expanding , or pounding headache. She had no signs of external pathogens " exterior wind cold / heat " , no deficiency signs " fatigue, tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness " , nor any zang fu signs " abdominal, chest discomfort nor bowel disorders " , no sign of internal disorders. Her face usually has dry skin, no sore throat, not thirst, no signs of cold or heat either. She has a regular menstruation, moderate pulses ( clear, strong and smooth ), normal tongue coat ( pink, slightly wet ). No cough, no signs of sickness. However, an attack can come at anytime with an aura. Her face, mouth, and eyes twisted very severely and saliva drooling. Her arms became so stiff and also twisted. It looked horrible. I have tried to diagnose this case, but still not sure. I need some help. This is what I think, but please correct me if there is any mistake. There is no signs of exterior, this must be interior. There is no signs of deficiency. There is no signs of pain, this must be no blood stagnation, no damp, no phlegm stagnation; for blood, damp or phlegm are yin and must have form. If yin are stagnated, there must be a form and it must be a fixed place. Beside, blood stagnation gives us pain, a local fixed pain; a damp gives us heaviness or sticky sensation; a phlegm gives us heaviness, sticky and dizzness or vertigo. There is no signs of wind, because there is no vertigo, dizziness, or aching. There is no zangfu signs of problems. This is not a system of problem. So what is this ? Is this a stagnation, or an obstruction of Qi? TCM thinks that one thing is alive or able to move must have its good Qi. Eyes must have Qi to operate, to see; arms and legs must have Qi to move; mouth, ear, noses must have Qi to work; brain , hair, tendons, blood, bones must have Qi to stay alive and able to function properly. But all of these motor and sensation center are located in the brain, and the brain needs a good Qi. If an area of these centers has no Qi, everything connected to it must be shut down. There is no signs of disturbancy so far, so there must be a stagnation which blocks the Qi to the pathway to the brain that activates certain the activities of the body. This activity controls the movement of the eyes, mouth, ear, arms and legs.. … But what shuts it down temporarily, then resupply the Qi itself? What happens to the pathway? Why does it behave this way? Shut down for a minute and turn it back on, is there any signs of TCM which reveals this way? If our Qi is shut down for a minute, does it mean our Qi is not clean, it flows but it is difficult to get through a tunnel, a channel, a pathway. Is a difficulty an interruption , an attack ? A dirty Qi must have something in its forms " then it must be a form of blood, damp, phlegm , pathogen or viruses ? " accompanied, something which might interfere our Qi in the pathway to the brain. Is this why it happens eratically, not periodically? If our Qi is shut down for a minute, does it mean our pathway is temporary shrinking and blocks our Qi? Is there something in our Qi which triggers certain pathway to close temporarily? For all, our Qi dominates all the functioning of cells, tissues and our lives. What should we do if this is a lead? My girlfriend dishes are vegetables and fruits, she also have meats too, nothing too extreme. How do we clean our Qi and our pathways to the brains? Is any herbs or formulas which clear all the obstructions? Or anybody else has any other ideas any other lead ? Experience ? Please input. Thanks all for reading. Guest guest
Nam, That's a lot of moving the mind... eventually, you want to get past that... Basically, epilepsy is Liver Wind. Liver Wind comes from Liver Fire or Kidney Yin deficiency, blood deficiency or a combination of the 3 factors. Shaking is like Wind moving the trees...treat with Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin and/or Long Dan Xie Gan Tang and check for Blood deficiency and perhaps add Ba Zhen Tang. As for acupuncture, treat the Spleen, Liver and GB... Xia San Huang, Liv 2, 3, 6, GB 34, 36, 39 might be a good start. You don't need to needle both sides. If your patient would listen to some lifestyle changes, it would help. These include more Liver Wind pacifying actions including meditation, yoga, less drinking, cutting out sweets, having a good diet, etc... Let me know how she does. Guest guest
A naturopath once told me that, when an epileptic feels a seizure coming on, that they should rub Lobelia Extract at the base of their skull as a preventative. I've never had the opportunity to test this. He also said that you need to use Teeter Creek brand, as it is the only brand with the purity and strength to be effective. From a TCM standpoint, I would think there would be some combination of wind and/or phlegm. - " Nam " <dr_namnguyen58 <Chinese Medicine > Tuesday, November 10, 2009 10:11 AM Has anybody seen and treated epilepsy successfully? Guest guest
Hi Nam: I had three questions and a comment: 1. What does she feel *when she is having the seizure*? Does she have pain, sensation of qi moving etc - her pathology may only show up evidently during a seizure. 2. A description of her physical presentation during a seizure is very important. Does she have rigidity or flaccidity? Does she turn red or purple or pale, does she arch her back with extreme rigour or does she arch then relax, arch then relax very quickly? How does she feel immediatley *after* the seizure? Does she feel tired, dizzy, shaky, chest feels ok etc?? 3. What do you say is the *reason* that she responds to *very gentle* treatment of LI4? This seems a big clue to me. Comment: Can we not say that she has deficiency? 1. She has had the problem for a long time. 2. She is a woman and women tend to have blood deficiency. 3. lack of obvious signs would also indicate deficiency (excess should have " loud " signs). 3. Her very high sensitivity and volatility when she has had treatments by TCM before also indicates either extreme excess or extreme deficiency, especially of the liver. I have not treated a case like hers, I agree that you are right to be so careful. I am very interested to know what you think and the answers to the above questions, good luck Nam. Please help. I am sorry I did not provide this important note. Sometimes when I was with her, she told me she had an aura, a warning, I use acupressure on LI4 , on either side gently, not both sides, her attacks vanishes. Is there any lead ? LI4 , a yangming channel goes up to the head, face, nose, mouth, cross the DU channel at Du26. Also LI4 is a big 4gates. Thanks
