Herbal Tx of cryptorchidism [Yingao = hidden Testis]?

Hi All,

Herbal Tx of cryptorchidism was discussed on VBMA recently. I tried to find

WWW references on that.

Chinese sources, especially Chinese University / Hospital sources,

use repeated injections of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) as

primary Tx, followed by surgery to exteriorise the testis (or remove it

if needs be) if HCG does not work within a few months.

Though some single herbs and formulas mention cryptorchidism as a

clinical indication, and several herbs + formulas are used to treat

other testicular disorders (pain, trauma, orchitis, hernia, torsion,

oligospermia, etc), I could not find a single Chinese site with the

characters (Yingao) in the title page that mentioned herbal Tx

within the page.

Does this mean that current Chinese Tx of cryptorchidism ignores

herbal treatment?

Could colleagues fluent in Chinese try a search of Chinese WWW to

confirm or refute this.

Please post your response to the List, with any Chinese URLs that

show benefit of herbal Tx in cryptorchidism.

Best regards,

Hi Phil,

Try searching éšç¾ä¸åŒ». I found a few sites right away. BTW,

I often start the searches as simply as possible. One of the problems of

searching something like 中è¯æ²»ç–—éšç¾ç—‡ is that the

search will probably return a huge of number of hospital/clinic advert

websites. These will usually only list a cut-n-paste of the western tx,

and statement like " TCM also available " and " call now to schedule your

examination and tx " . One way around this is to type in some of the herbs

you might expect to be used in tx. For example, something like

中è¯æ²»ç–—éšç¾ç—‡ èŸä¸å can be a start to

giving better search results.

Interesting example here of the typical problems that we find on the

internet. This is one of the first sites that came up

http://www.longnk.com/yingao/kepu/20090728821.html

<http://www.longnk.com/yingao/kepu/20090728821.html> - describes

yingao, the TCM explanation, the suggested acupuncture tx and herbal tx.

Here's my rough translation of the herbs they suggest:

roucongrong, yinyanghuo, bajitian, shajili [i remember this being

shayuanzi, saltwater processedchinese milkvetch seed, but haven't

checked], 6 grams each, tusizi 12 g, raw oyster 15 g, rougui 15g (put it

in after the other herbs aredecocted, just before drinking), 1 dose per

day, take 50 consecutive doses.

Hmm, the 15g of rougui sounds wrong. It's way above the normal 1 to 2

grams dose of real rougui. I'd definitely only use real rougui, and 15 g

per dose sounds like way too much, would be very very strong in flavor

and I'm guessing in effect (I've never tried that much at once) and

would be very very expensive. (and on a side note, the " raw " oyster

brings up questions. Do they mean raw as in a rawoyster shooter? or raw

as in " not the typical chinese dried oyster " buta raw oyster to be

cooked into the decoction. And would you want torisk giving anything

oyster-related to an infant?).

So looking around some more this site comes up

http://www.med126.com/tcm/2009/20090113020109_74791.shtml

<http://www.med126.com/tcm/2009/20090113020109_74791.shtml> - has more

in-depth TCM discussion of yingao, and two formulas. First one is more

just a collection of herbs by function - a useful " which herbs and why " .

The second formula looks very much like the one on the longnk.com site.

roucongrong, xianlingpi [ " immortal spirit spleen " an interesting

alternate name for yinyanghuo],bajitian, shajili, 6 grams each, tusizi

12 g, raw oyster 15 g, rougui 1.5g [again, put it in after the other

herbs aredecocted, just before drinking BUT LOOK AT THE DOSE],

shechuangzi 4.5 g, decoct in water, 1 dose per day. The above formula

was used with modification as the base for treating bilateral

cryptorchidism in 15 month old children. After 50 doses, the left and

right testicles descended to the scrotum in succession.

Would be good to find the original " study " but this is still much better

than the longhk.com info. I'm sure there is more and better info out

there. I just went with the first site that had somewhat relevant

results.

Please let us know if you find a good formula for tx yingao. I'd imagine

acupuncture would be very effective for this problem. First idea that

comes to mind is LV5 and radiate qi to testicles then wrap the qi around

the needle and gently drag down without draining (and the ear points

mentioned in the med126.com site are something I hadn't considered).

When I was in Dr. Wang Juyi's clinic in Beijing, we treated a young male

patient about a year and a half old w liver muscle channel weakness

whose WM orthopedist had stated that the boy would never be able to

stand or walk properly. It was very easy to deqi up the liver channel

and he responded very well with the problem appearing to totally resolve

after what I remember to be three months of tx, 3x /week to start,

dropping to 1x / week. Not the same dz, but probably similar pattern w

kidney and/or liver [muscle] channel weakness, easily diagnosed with

palpation.

also, specialized sites like wanfangdata.com bring up much better results. It

requires a subscription though, which I don't have atm- too many patients

leaving hardly any time for research

I remember researching this very topic four years ago. Around that time I had a

one year old boy with left cryptorchidism. I made up a formula after researching

and showed the parents to do moxa on the liver and kidney channel. The

pediatrist had expressed that surgery was the only option. Two months later he

saw the boy again and to his surprise the testicle has descended. He shrugged

his shoulders and said it was pure coincidence...NOT! :-)

Anyway I would like to give you the formula but I lost all my files due to a

computer crash some three years ago- including my researched articles :-(

Perhaps I can recover the formula from the supplier if necessary. I remember it

was a kidney yang boosting and blood moving formula, as we would expect...
