Guest guest
Dear Carol Ann, Quite frankly, it depends upon how much alcohol you use versus the amount of herb. With all my tinctures, there is only about 1/5th of the menstrum above the dried herb when they have settled by the next day. And the Echinacea Augustifolia is made from fresh roots that are sent to me wrapped in burlap to ensure that I get the truly potent Augustifolia. This ensures that the tincture is extremely potent and - when decanted - the alcoholic content is small indeed. HOWEVER - with commercial tinctures (who - in many cases actually use nail polish remover to extract the phytochemicals or use about 1/5th herb to 4/5ths menstum and who do not necesariyl worry about the freshness of the herbs uses either fresh or dried.) - there WOULD be far too much alcohol. You COULD even make the indivual tinctures with Organic apple Cider Vinegar or - for kids - with glycerin, if you were VERY concerned about the amount of alcohol. Good point..........Herbally yours Penny Hi Penny. Great recipe. I was wondering, although the alcohol content in the tinctures is usually between 50-94% depending, for someone with sensitive gum tissue or mucosa inflamation, it could be a problem. I have read differences of opinions, some stating the belief that EXTRACTS are even more potent than TINCTURES and most extracts have less alcohol. Is it possible, in your opinion, to use Extracts as effective substitutes.
