Guest guest
Well, you guys -- I have to hand it to you. Despite the subject's potential, you guys did a reasonably good job of keeping your cool. I don't want to add anything -- just say, thanks for behaving yourselves -- mostly. Susan H. This will probably be my last post to the list on the subject we have been playing Ping Pong with .. but I am writing a very long disseration on this subject ;-) and will probably put it on a link for those who
Guest guest
Hey Kathleen, Merry Christmas! ;-) This will probably be my last post to the list on the subject we have been playing Ping Pong with .. but I am writing a very long disseration on this subject ;-) and will probably put it on a link for those who want to read it .. not sure yet if I'll finish it cause its not really a hot item on my agenda. I'm doing my best to keep the personal out and focusing primarily on the Sociological aspects of freedoms .. and the Political aspects of government control. There is far more to this issue of Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays than has been discussed on this list .. and there are some misunderstandings being used to justify positions .. these are Fruit of the Poison Tree. Just as I strongly believe that judges are no better qualified to make decisons (outside of interpretation of laws) that affect our lives, I believe that I am NOT more intelligent than the majority of the members of this list. But just as those judges are trained and experienced at interpreting the intent of laws .. I MIGHT have a bit or two of more experience in evaluating the historical (future?) results of knee jerk decisions of courts and attempts by governments to control the lives of the masses .. because I am a trained and experienced political analyst; it was my job for a number of years. > Butch... I'm not going to wish you a " Happy Throat Slitting " . That's just > too gruesome for me. I'm quite sure it's probably from the days when they > killed off animals to store up for winter, that it was a day of feasting and > celebrating the fact they would have something to carry them through the > long days of winter... THAT I can understand. I will instead hope that you > enjoy the festivities that are certain to form around such an event. Actually its a very Religious Holiday .. twas ancient Christian and a present day Jewish and Moslem Holiday. It commemorates how Isaac was nearly sacrificed by Abraham .. or to some Moslems .. how Ismael was almost sacrificed .. its not really clear which of Abrahams's sons was the " favorite " or the " chosen " . Isaac the son of Abraham's Jewish wife and Ismael was the son he had with his wife's Egyptian maidservant. Kurban (Sacrifice) Bayram (Holiday) is one of the key tenets of Islam. Its about shared social responsibility. Families who can afford to sacrifice an animal do so and there is a complex code stipulating how the carcass should be distributed amongst friends, family and charitable organizations .. the one sacrificing the animal can keep only a small part of the meat and even then they can keep none of the choice cuts. It's a major public holiday here and shops and businesses close .. some for up to a week. This " free time " is tough on the transport system, both public and private, and newspapers publish daily head counts of traffic deaths. Before the holiday we see sheep, goats and cattle on the outskirts of town as owners bring them in to be sold. On the day of sacrifice the more squeamish stay out of the way because, though its illegal, many animals are slaugtered on the street. I have participated in Kurban Bayram three times during the past 20 + years .. but I won't do it again because I (like many modern thinking Turks) think its a holiday that has outlived its purpose and I don't like the way it is practiced. Plus my wife doesn't approve. ;-) In fact .. modern Christians also make sacrifices but they normally do it on Sunday by putting something valuable to them in the plate when its passed around. Both forms of sacrificed are supposed to be about shared social responsibility but both have lost their original intent methinks. http://www.bakupages.com/pages/traditions/kurban_en.php If you wanna see the sacrifice in gory living color .. go here. ;-) http://asia.pg.photos./ph/jaentenim30/album?.dir=47b8 & .src=ph & %3Bamp%3B\ amp%3Bamp%3Bamp%3Bstore= & prodid= & %3Bamp%3Bamp%3Bamp%3Bamp%3B.done=http%3A//asia.\ pg.photos./ph/jaentenim30/my_photos http://www.sensibledinner.com/Kurban%20Bayram.html > Me I'm going to pretend you never said anything about " Happy Throat > Slitting " What? That would be signifying on a religious group. ;-) > and try and bake Christmas cookies for the kids. You're gonna bake Christmas cookies? What's the difference twixt them and Holiday cookies? ;-) > I've been too sick to do much fun stuff for and with the kids this > year so now I need to make it up to them. Y'all Get Well Soon .. Gecmis Olsun .. Stanovivshijs'a Zdorovyj Skoro. > So, enjoy all the festivities that are coming your way, I'm sure that > having Tanya in your life will add an extra touch of joy to them.
