Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays - An Issue With More Sides Than the Pentagon

Hey y'all,

 

Gonna send a couple of articles that are fairly reasonable .. leastwise

I think they are. I doubt if there is enough right or wrong in this

discussion for anyone to make a clear cut decision using only their

brain pan. ;-)

 

I'm not dead set on the use of either Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays

in greetings .. what I am dead set against is gummit interference. In

some Third World and Emerging Market countries gummits interfere in

order to control the masses. In the Western World gummits interfere due

to some judge's opinion and in an attempt to satisfy all the people on

all sides .. but the Western gummits temper their interference with self

serving intent .. usually disguised betwixt the Conservative righteous

indignation and the Liberal " Secular " condemnation. Its all BS .. all

designed to win the hearts and minds .. and votes .. of the people. ;-)

 

I don't fear Right Wing, Conservative, Hard Core Christian Activists or

Liberal, Socialist Minded Progressives .. I believe there is not enough

strength in those extreme elements to cause permanent damage of any

kind. I believe that the people of the United States (and in time,

their cousins in Europe) will eventually make their desires known to a

degree that their gummits will be forced to stretch their pea brains in

an attempt to satisfy all .. and when the gummits see that this is an

impossible (and likely an illegal) task .. they will probably get out of

the way and let the people work the issues out on a case by case basis.

Of course, we will always need some gummit involvement to preclude

dangerous discrimination .. which can not be defined as a Christian

objecting to display of a Menorah or a Jew objecting to display of a

Nativity Scene .. or either objecting to display of Moslem ceremony.

 

What I fear is gummit interference in our lives. Those who can't

understand the reasons for that fear might wanna bone up on world history.

 

There can be no Separation of Church and State when gummits enforce the

separation .. think on that a bit. ;-)

 

Gummits and authoritarian regimes have historically controlled the

masses by either denying them the right to practice their religion .. or

by forcing them to practice a particular religion. Basically, we're

talking lack of Freedom of Religious Choice. From the Inquisition to

the Church of England to the Pilgrims to the Taliban to the present

regime in Saudi - we see control of the people via control of religion.

 

The issue of Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays is a hot topic today and

not likely to cool off for a long time. But at some point in the future

it will just become another of the many historical issues in the process

of ongoing change that all countries face .. and American school books

will most likely give it less coverage than they now give to George

Washington's crossing of the Delaware.
