Morning sickness and Peppermint EO

I'm wondering if anyone has any information about using peppermint EO during

pregnancy for nausea? My grandaughter asked for my help, she has it all day,

and besides giving her various herbal tinctures and teas, I wanted to give

her a formula that I use with peppermint eo in it, but I read a negative

report about it causing a disabled baby, so I told her to just sniff it, but

now I'm even worried about that. I told her not to use it until I am very

sure of it's safety. I went on the web, and found about 50/50 pros and cons.

Is there anything more definitive about this, with actual proof that it is

safe? If not, does anyone have any actual experiences with herbs for this?

She is still in the first trimester, and it's her first baby, (19 yo). She

is so happy about it, watching her diet, absolutely no sugar, says her baby

will not have sugar.

I appreciate any help anyone has to offer,

Sanandra

Can't help you with the peppermint EO question but eating a slice of a raw

potato did wonders for my morning sickness. If I was awake, I sick when I was

expecting 2 of my kids. Someone told me to try a slice of raw potato and it was

a miracle drug - stopped the vomiting within minutes. I'd keep a few slices

cover with water in a covered container nest to the bed and eat a slice or 2 as

soon as I woke up and it took care of the morning sickness.

I've had six kids and m.s. with every one of them, but did not have any

knowledge of what to do, so I just dealt with it, so I never heard of the

potato remedy, but I have already passed it on to her, and thank you so much

for your help!

I was also told to eat dry crackers to help with the morning sickness. Didn't

help me a bit but worked great for one of my daughters. It may not help, but it

won't hurt to try. Morning sickness was what told me every time that I was

pregnant but it didn't last long with 3 of my kids, but with the other 2, I was

sick almost the entire time I carried them. Hope you find something that will

help her.

As far as I know, use of any and all essential oils should be avoided during

first trimester and I am pretty sure peppermint essential oil is

contra-indicated for pregnancy entirely. I think you can use the peppermint

herb in a tea or for culinary use but it would be unethical to test on

pregnant women in order to actually " prove " that an essential oil is safe or

unsafe for pregnancy. I would consult a naturopathic doctor or midwife for

best information on pregnancy and herbs or maybe the venerable Mr. Watt will

have a free moment this week to comment. Better safe than sorry; I'd stick

to just herbal infusions and avoid the EO. There are plenty of ways to

prevent and treat nausea w/o using EOs so there shouldn't be a need to take

the risk.

We have heard of the cracker idea, and I guess it's the low blood sugar

thing, plus the acid build-up in the empty stomach, but like you say, what

works for one will not work for another. I always found the peppermint EO

helpful for nausea and indigestion, so I had hoped to use it for her, but

I'm not sure if the oil will be too strong the first trimester.

Thanks,

S

Bonnie,

Thanks for posting those sites; you're right that the oil should not be used

if there is any doubt, so that's why I did not want her to take the chance.

It was just that it was so useful for me [not m.s.] that I thought it would

help relieve her nausea as well, but not if there was any threat of harm.

That's the reason I'm being so investigative and cautious. I did read his

site, the first one you posted, previously, but did not see peppermint

listed as one to avoid, so it still left me unsure.

Thanks for your help,

Sanandra

Just a quickie on this then I'm off for a nap.

I'm an ultra conservative when it comes to using EO's in the first

trimester. Won't use them on me body at ALL... But that's me, it goes

against my comfort zone. It's my choice and mine only. BUT... Thank the Gods

for Peppermint oil... Used it and loved it for nausea. I would put it on a

hankie and sniff sniff sniff! And during my 2nd pregnancy I was travelling

alot between two towns on a BUS and if it weren't for the Peppermint oil, I

would have re-decorated those busses with an olfactory nightmare.

I have found that there are very few absolutes in Aromatherapy and NEVER

using eo's during the first trimester is one of these. One needs to be

careful because of increased skin sensitivity and increased olfactory

sensitivity, which is why when using oils during pregnancy, the amount of

oil usually used on the pregnant woman is halved, some being completely

excluded sheerly for " not enough information's sake " .

Whoops, fried brain. Still very tired, haven't eaten hardly anything in

about 4 days so no energy either (although have had a few Satsumas, them are

okay) so can't think well... hope that said whatever I was going for.
