Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I have an 11 year old Chocolate Lab & have never taken out the natural oils in her fur after bathing her. I have to ask what you used to bathe her with? Oh, & I have never used a conditioner on her as I feel because their hair IS so " oily " they don't really need one. How old is your dog? It seems from what I gather Labs can have dry skin. My Maggie scratches too but usually when she is blowing her coat (in the spring & the winter.) The culprit in your case could be the products that you used. If you could tell me what you used that might help...Sometimes it could even be an allergy to what she is eating...altho in Maggie's case she is on a holistic food, but of course you can still have an allergy to something natural. Email me offlist if you'd like & we can talk about it & not tie up the list with " dog talk " !! lol Have a great day!!! donna Donna Buchholz Something Different Soap & Things mizbucky " she is itching like crazy because I took out the natural oils in her fur "

Our dog picked up a microscopic flea and it took a trip to the vet to finally get rid of it. He showed us the little nasty under a microscope. Susan H. Guest guest
We couldn't see them. The doc showed us one of Sarge's hair under a microscope and there were lots of them, not just one. The doc called them a flea, but he might have just used that term to be more patient-friendly. We thought, incorrectly so because we couldn't see anything, that it was just dry skin. He just got worse, and we were all miserable -- after just a couple of days, he couldn't even sleep, so we knew it was something serious. The doctor gave him a shot to ease the itching and we had to shampoo him once a week (??? can't really remember now) and spray him with something before he went out -- each time he went out. It took a while, but the shot got him through the worst of it. Once the shot wore off, the fleas were on the run. We just had to keep after them for a while. We have no idea where he picked them up and he's never had them again. Susan H. " a microscopic flea " Hi Susan...I never heard of this!!! Did your dog only have one? Guest guest
In actuality, what you probably saw was a sarcoptic mite. They are microscopic, burrow underneath the skin and require something similar to ivermectin to get rid of them. They're quite tenacious and VERY uncomfortable. :-( Kirstin --- Susan Harkins <harkinsss wrote: > We couldn't see them. Guest guest
The dry skin could be a result of the swimming/bath/conditioner and it could also be an aggravation from the diet. What food do you feed? First of all I would re-rinse the dog to be sure that all the soap and conditioner were off. Then just brushing will free up oils in the skin and stop the dryness. Internally, essential fatty acids (flaxseed oil or fish oil) Vit C and E and zinc supplements. Are there any hot spots from the itching, redness to the skin.....is the itching in certain spots or total body?
