Guest guest
Hi Elaine, > Butch, > It has been indicated to me that ingestion of Oregano Oil, even > well-diluted can cause kidney problems. Are you aware of any such > information? Elaine I want to give a simple answer to this but if I do it will just create more questions .. so I'll risk talking down to some folks .. but there is no way to know the level of understanding of 1,100 + list members. First .. if I were going to be concerned about anything I would worry about the liver before I would the kidneys .. but as Oregano is NOT a toxic oil per se, I wouldn't worry about the liver or kidneys if they were healthy to begin with. The LD-50 extrapolation for a lethal dose of Oregano EO in a 3 year old is 21 ml .. that is a lotta oil and its not possible (methinks) for anyone to consume that amount at one time. Of course .. there can be cumulative effects if one goes overboard and consumes 5-6 drops 8 or 10 times a day for a long period of time .. but that applies more so to many other EO with much lower LD-50 thresholds. I say " extrapolation " because the LD-50 tests were never conducted on humans; they are old tests using animals and the results were applied to humans. Such tests are supposed to be no longer performed .. and if anyone is performing them .. its under cover. If one has overworked kidneys or some form of congenital or acquired disease of the kidneys then ingestion of cola or coffee or alcohol or essential oils and many other normally NON TOXIC substances could be a no no .. might cause additional problems. But as far as I know, there is NO INFORMATION available from ANY RELIABLE SCIENTIFIC SOURCE to suggest that occasional ingestion of diluted Origanum would/could cause problems in otherwise healthy kidneys .. its a very common practice in many circles. Many of my friends/acquaintances here .. professors in academia and in medicine .. routinely ingest Oregano Hydrosol .. it is sold in all the supermarket chains. I ingest Oregano and Rosemary, Cineole for a couple of days maybe once or twice a year .. but I am doing it less often now because I have began to believe that I can get the same benefits from inhalation .. that is what Aromatherapy is all about anyway. And .. there is no way we can really know what chemical changes occur in a whole essential oil when it comes into contact with stomach acids. >>but I do not make recommendations to others on ingestion of essential >>oils. I write this often because I am not a medical doctor and I believe that when one recommends or suggests ingestion of any chemical .. or even says that what they are selling is " therapeutic " , they are illegally dispensing medications .. unless they have a medical license. Y'all keep smiling . :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
