Hey y'all,

Marge is absolutely right .. unfortunately, there has not been a single

natural, safe and efficient/effective preservative discovered to date.

When a company comes out with a SAFE and EFFECTIVE Natural Preservative

I wanna get in on the ground floor of their stock sales because that

company will soon make Bill Gates look like a pauper.

Some folks even claim Vitamin E is a preservative. Vitamin E is an

antioxidant, not a preservative. Some folks confuse preservatives and

antioxidants .. the latter being agents that inhibit micro biological

growth. Antioxidants assist in preventing oxidation (rancidity) and

make a product look better but they're useless as far as keeping fungus,

yeast and bacterial critters from growing.

We can get confused if we look up the words in a dictionary because

there is a lot of overlap .. very broad definitions .. but in the

cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry the definitions I gave above are

universally accepted.

There are some natural preservatives that are not efficient because the

amount needed to be effective isn't acceptable. Oregano and some EO are

safe and natural and effective but not efficient .. to be efficient a

product must serve the purpose for which it is intended to be used ..

but the percentage of Oregano (for example) required to perform that

task would be too high for practical use .. and maybe even safe use.

The amount needed to work as a natural preservative would spoil the

cosmetic product .. so we can not say it is efficient.

GSE is not a preservative .. it might help prevent rancidity but that's

all. The jury is NOT out in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries

that spend hundreds or millions of dollars each year on research trying

to discover a SAFE and EFFECTIVE natural preservative .. to date, they

have NOT found one.

Determining if an agent works as a preservative requires periodic lab

tests to determine the growth rate of various bacterial and other forms

of nasties .. I'm talking more than one test and more than one nasty.

Testing is expensive for us but not for them .. but its fairly simple.

Determining if an agent inhibits growth of micro biological agents is

easy if you have the time and money to test.

Word of mouth and/or rumor do not create a preservative. Scientific

testing does. If one claims to have a SAFE, EFFECTIVE and NATURAL

preservative we should assume that it has been tested by some company

sometime in the past and rejected for not meeting all of the necessary

parameters .. or it is a gold mine awaiting discovery and the person

talking should be spending their time at the Patent Office instead of

peddling the product on a web site or News Group.

Those who make lotions have 3 choices .. (1) use synthetic commercial

preservatives and lie and say your product is all natural .. or (2) use

them and tell the truth and say its almost all natural .. or (3) use no

preservative at all and say that its all natural but has a very short

shelf life .. like days. Option 3 puts the buyer and the seller at risk

because cosmetic items are usually contaminated by most users within 24

hours of purchase because folks do mishandle cosmetics and such .. like

sticking their fingers in creams.

There could be a legal ramifications for those who don't cover their

butts well. Covering one's butt means taking the degree of care which a

reasonable, prudent person would exercise under the same or similar

circumstances. Use of a synthetic preservative is the best one can do

to ensure their butt is covered.

> They say GSE is but the jury is still out

IF .. GSE (grapefruit seed extract).. demonstrates even the slightest

bit of preservation qualities .. it does so because of the synthetics it

contains and its those synthetics that actually have a potential for

minor preservation.

Correct! I say again .. we must be alert to get in on the ground floor

of stock issues if and when someone comes up with a LEGITIMATE, SAFE,

EFFECTIVE, NATURAL preservative .. which ain't happened yet!

I invite anyone to prove me wrong .. it would make me happy if someone

proved me wrong on this subject. ;-)
