So, one of my new neighbors popped a new one on me last night. She said

that she gives her dog pills to keep his pee from burning the lawn (which

makes me very frightened of my new neighborhood that people here are a) even

concerned about such a thing and b) would actually give a pill to a dog for

it. i fear that i have just moved into the neighborhood where fox mulder

found the garbage monster that attacked people who broke the smallest CC & R

....so if you don't hear from me every now and then ... call the FBI

please!!!!).

Anyway, random X-files thoughts aside. She went on to say " it's something

natural called 'yucka' " ... and i was a little surprised that it actually

was something natural ... just wondering if anyone on this list has heard of

this use of yukca root (sorry, i had to hold back the laughs every time she

said " yucka " ) and if it is safe to give it to dogs for any length of time.

it concerned me that she was giving her somewhat large dog " four pills every

night " but i'm not sure what form or potency said pills are. i guess my

concern is just long term use of an herb for a non-medical non-problem. not

that i'd probably even bother to mention anything to her (unless the conerns

were really significant) but i'm just curious and a little flabergasted at

the attitude about giving an animal a pill to keep the fricking lawn from

going brown. i have heard from landscapers that there are fertilizers you

can use to prevent such spots and leave the poor animal to just shit and pee

in peace (i haven't looked into them b/c, in case you haven't figured it

out, i don't really care about the brown spots and wasn't sure if the

fertilizer would be anything organic i'd even want on my lawn)

My Dog, and here i was thinking that i'd just get some clean gravel and

build a *dog run* for my dog to pee and poop on. so, as a current student of

herbalism, why the heck didn't i think of altering his body chemistry

instead??? it's " natural, " right????

grrrr.

It is my policy to no longer use language that accepts the current

concept of animals as property, commodities and/or things. Rather than

refer to myself or others as " owners " of animals we share our lives with, I

now refer to myself and others as " guardians " of our animal friends and

to animals as " he " or " she " rather than " it. " Guardians do not buy or

sell animals; instead they rescue and adopt. I urge you to do the same.

Maybe this will help explain...

Yucca Root (Yucca schidigera), powder. Traditional use internally for arthritis

and rheumatism. Yucca Root may purify the blood and act as an anti-inflammatory

that can be beneficial for arthritis, osteoporosis and other inflammatory

conditions. It contains steroid saponins, calcium, potassium, iron, manganese,

copper, phosphorus, vitamins A, C, and B-complex. Yucca Root has been found to

reduce pain and increase mobility by production of natural steroids in the body.

Yucca Root also aids digestion and is a liver, blood, and digestive system

detoxifier. It is helpful for allergies, asthma, skin problems, body odor, and

stress. Yucca Root has also been used in soap-making, and its emollient,

cleansing properties make it an ideal ingredient in shampoo and other hair care

products. Saponins in roots of yucca species possess long-lasting soaping

action. Yucca Root is gaining increasing attention among dog owners for its

success in treating arthritis, hip dysplasia, and other degenerative

bone and joint diseases (although not for cancer of the bone).
