I feel your pain! We have Whole Foods here and they are quite expensive. I understand about family budgets! I have 4 boys who eat a lot! I do not buy packaged foods. I find that most people spend a dis- proportionally large amount of their food budget on " convenience " items and " lunchbox treats " for the kiddies. Or think nothing of spending hand over fist on sodas and juice/sports " drinks " , but cringe at the thought of spending money on organic produce! Please don't get offended if you are not one who does this! And for those of you who do shop this way and get offended, I am sorry but I feel that whole foods are the way to go and think too many people in the US have been brainwashed by the devious marketing that the packaged food industry utilizes. Do people really feel that they would be " depriving " their children if they didn't buy them the latest box of " sugar bombs " ...paaahhhleeeze! I spend no more on my groceries OVER- ALL than the typical American. I just purchase different types of food. In a typical week, we go thru 4# oranges, 20# bananas, 10# apples (1/2 of which I juice) 1pkg celery, 3# onions, 10# potatoes, and several pounds of other seasonal salad and veggies. My kids get fruit and veggies and nuts and homemade granola and homemade whole grain muffins in their lunch instead of twinkies and chips. I also bake our bread. ANYONE can do this nowadays and cannot tell me that they don't have the time! I am VERY busy with my four boys and trying to start a business! Consider using a bread machine, it takes 5 minutes to dump the ingredients into the hopper! I got mine for $10, new in the original box at a garage sale! We also eat meat, I buy organic beef by the side and this way I don't pay much more than traditional beef! I also get eggs from a friend who raises chickens. Just start asking around and you can find people in your community who sell organic. You can also do a search here http://www.localharvest.org/ for growers/producers in your area. We also eat raw milk, organic cheese that I get thru a food co-op. The co-op is also where I buy bulk ingredients like oats, nuts and corn meal. I get my whole graham flour from an organic mill here in Michigan, this is my splurge, I could get it cheaper from the co-op, but love the quality of fresh ground flour and also like to support local agriculture. The co-op I belong to uses United Natural Foods, you can ask if they have a co-op in your area or maybe start one up yourself! They can be reached at 800-451-4520 or http://www.unitedbuyingclubs.com. You would be suprised how much organic food you can buy when you eliminate the packaged/convenience items. And also how much healthier your family will be! I hope this helps. Warm regards and continue to be, Lori
