Guest guest
Hi Selene, > Ok, Butch, I am asking on list. Good show. :-) > What is Carvacrol? Linalool? Gonna give you a buncha answers .. some you can use and the rest you will probably discard. ;-) But .. keep in mind that the answers below pertain to the isolated chemical component .. not a good idea to hang our hat on that because we're missing the whole picture .. that is .. the natural synergy .. and in some cases it can be a very small trace chemical that completes the natural therapeutic value of an oil. Carvacrol .. a chemical compound naturally found in many aromatic plants. Technically .. its a phenolic compound (C10H14O) common in plants such as oregano and savory. Its commonly used in flavorings and fungicides .. it has antibacterial and antispasmodic capabilities .. and I personally believe it has the ability to boost the immune system in such a way that it can cause viruses to stop reproducing .. to go back into retrograde. Some (but just a few of the many) non-commercial articles of information on the effects of carvacrol are here: http://aem.asm.org/cgi/content/abstract/71/2/797?etoc http://www.ibiblio.org/herbmed/eclectic/bpc1911/origanum-hirt_carv.html http://jagor.srce.hr/ftbrfd/39-341.pdf http://www.p-73.com/pdf/AntifungalCandida.pdf For centuries .. folks knew that the addition of Oregano Oil to milk and other easily spoiled foods .. would retard spoilage .. science is just now looking at this. ;-) http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2180/5/36 Linalool .. a chemical compound naturally found in many aromatic plants. Technically, Linalool (C10H18O) is an unsaturated terpene alcohol common in plants like lavender, some basils, oreganos, and thymes, coriander, rosewood, and other aromatics. Because of its pleasant scent (floral, with a touch of spiciness) its commonly used in the manufacture of perfumes, flavorings, soaps, shampoos, lotions and .. vitamin E. It has calming-relaxing effects when inhaled .. and http://www.positivehealth.com/permit/Articles/Aromatherapy/baud55.htm > What is the difference in the oregano oils? > (Origanum dubium) > (Origanum onites) > (Origanum vulgare) See below. > Is one better for something than another one? Nope. > Are they used for different things? Yep. > How do I know which one I want? See below. ;-) > For making soap? Matters not a lot from a therapeutic point of view .. wash off products are not going to harm you or help you .. physically .. unless one wants to soak a long time in the tub. Emotionally and/or psychologically .. it would depend on whether or not the person using the product liked the odor .. and .. whether or not the odor would be strong enough to allow it to enter the olfactory and affect the psych. What does matter is the cost .. I think some soap makers pay more for fragrance oils with unknown chemical properties than they would for some essential oils. > For mouth wash, antibotic-medicinal use? I would not recommend use of any natural product containing Carvacrol or Linalool as a mouth wash .. too much chance of irritation and more importantly .. sensitization. As for antibiotic and (I don't use the term medicinal as I'm not a medical doctor) the other uses you mention above .. any of the below will do the job. ;-) > thank you > Selene Welcome you are fer'shur. > Selene > She Who Watches and Waits > windancr Have a gud'un .. and y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com .. The Primary Source for wild grown Turkish Origanum Essential Oils - - - - - - - - - - SOME FACTS ON THE ORIGANUMS - - - - - - - - - - All of the Origanums except the Origanum dubium Linalool Type are carvacrol-rich and carvacrol is the active therapeutic component people seek. Higher carvacrol aromatic plants are more expensive to purchase. We have some plants that will produce oils with carvacrol levels over 80%. This simply means you get more bang for the buck when mixing it with olive oil or whatever. You use less oil to get the same results. Origanum vulgare is the best seller. Maybe people associate the name and the fact that there is one company making some fairly sound health claims and selling it as " Oil of Oregano " in a 10% Oregano/90% Olive Oil mixture for as much as $36.95 per 1 ounce bottle. So people see mine as being less costly. With mine, one can mix their own and create a dozen bottles of the $36.95 product for less than half the price. Origanum onites has been the next best seller and that might be due to some things I've written on it and a portion of the lecture I gave at an AT Conference in Toronto, Canada in September 1999. I presented some research conducted by five prominent professors in Turkey using Origanum onites in a project involving lung tumors in rats, using three different groups and three treatments, one of them being normal cancer treatments. I presented the study, showed the audience colored micro slides of the lung tissues. The Origanum onites not only stopped the growth but also caused recession of the growths! The lung tissue was reverting to its previously normal pink and clear state!! I made it clear that this is not an indication that it will cure cancer in humans but it shows a great need for further research and such research is ongoing. Origanum dubium is the next best seller, possibly because it appears to have a lighter odor than the others. Turks generally prefer it for home medication. Origanum dubium (Linalool type) is in its own class .. a very nice odor and dual therapeutic value. It's high in linalool, as is lavender, and high in carvacrol, as is oregano. It has healing properties of oregano and lavender .. so much so that the common name in Turkey is Lavanta Kekik (Lavender Oregano.) It's endemic to Turkey - not found elsewhere and even here it's only found in a very small corner of the Southeast. When people get samples of it from us, they buy it. I normally use it for inhalation and it is great for diffusion - I love the odor. I prefer Origanum vulgare, Origanum onites and Origanum dubium for kicking Big Bad Bug Butts but I do not make recommendations to others on ingestion of essential oils. I recommend buyers consult their doctor prior to this manner of usage. So - one can choose based on the above descriptions of each oil. For colds and flu, I use the onites, vulgare or dubium. For diffusion any one will do the job but just for inhalation, I'd go with the O. dubium (Linalool type) because I love the odor. All have proven antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-spasmodic properties and they are believed to be capable of stimulating the immune system.
