Oregano oil for internal antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral. Sage oil or

Eucalyptus oil for air purification in a diffuser. Eucalyptus, orange, lemon,

lime grapefruit in water as a room disinfectant spray (per Dr. Shultze) Lavender

for bug bites, burns headaches, baths. I also like the Bergamot (bee balm not

citrus) herb that grows here in Oklahoma for a migrane tea...it has lots of

carvacrol and opens my sinus real good. There are others buts thats good for

now.

Hi Selene,

 

I have listed my top ten essential oils that I, personally, would not

want to live without. I have listed the commercial oil name (or

common herbal name), botanical

name and the top three medicinal properties that I, personally,

associate to these particular oils/herbs.

 

I have also tried to define, in easily understood terms, what some of

the medicinal qualifications mean-in every day language. If I have

mis-interpreted any of the definitions, please feel free to correct

me (although I tend to stand by my terminology, ;) )!

 

My top ten oils (organic or wildgrown ONLY and aromatherapy quality):

 

Oregano-Origanum vulgare, Carvacrol chemotype: anti-biotic, anti-

viral, anti-septic

 

Lavendar-Lavandula angustifolia-analgesic(an agent for producing

insensibility to pain), anti-septic, sedative

 

Rosemary-Rosmarinus officinalis, 1,8 cineole chemotype: anti-septic,

decongestant, digestive

 

Plai-Zingibur cassumunar Roxb.: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-

septic

 

Eucalyptus-Eucalyptus globulus: anti-bacterial, decongestant,

expectorant(an agent that promotes the discharge or expulsion of

mucus from the respiratory tract)

 

 

Lemon-Citrus limonum (not eo, but expressed from peels): anti-

bacterial, anti-viral, stimulant

 

Orange-Citrus sinensis (not eo, but expressed from peels): anti-

bacterial, anti-viral, stimulant

 

Myrrh-Commiphora myrrha: anti-inflammatory, anti-catarrhal (catarrh

is the formation and accumulation of mucus in the nose and throat),

expectorant

 

Peppermint-Mentha piperita: anti-septic, expectorant, digestive

 

Catnip-Nepeta cataria: anti-septic, expectorant, insect repellent

 

My top ten herbs I will list in the same format (some of the herbs

have more than the top three medicinal uses because I felt that the

majority of the uses needed to be acknowleged and therefore more

easily utilized by those who are trying to break away from " pharmco

drugs " :

 

Stinging Nettle-Urtica dioica: anti-histimine, anti-inflammatory,

good whole food source of iron and trace minerals

 

Astragalus root-Astragalus membranaceous: anti-biotic, anti-

inflammatory, anti-viral

 

Dandelion leaf and root-Taraxacum officinale-leaf is: anti-histimine,

anti-inflammatory, and a good source of inulin (a form of

carbohydrate easily assimilated by diabetics); root is: cholagogue

(increases bile flow from the liver,) choleretic (increases bile flow

from the gallbladder,) and diuretic (tending to increase urine flow)

 

Milk Thistle seed-Silybum marianum: cholagogue, digestive, an

excellent source of potent flavonoids (anti-oxidents)

 

Chamomile flowers-Matricaria chamomilia: anti-inflammatory, anti-

spasmodic, carminative (expells gas)/sedative

 

Calendula flowers-Calendula officinalis: anti-inflammatory,

diuretic, febrifuge (reduces fever)

 

Valerian root-Valeriana officinalus: anodyne (pain reliever), anti-

convulsant, anti-spasmodic (muscle relaxant), calmative (sedative,

depressant), carminative ( relieves upset stomache and digstion,

expels gas), and nervine (tranquliziler)

 

Raspberry Leaf-Rubus idaeus: internal astringent( bowel regulator,

internal bleeding, ulcers) external astringent( sores, itching,

chronic skin disease) regulates female hormone production (uterine

tonic, hormone regulator)

 

Schizandra berry-Schizandra chinensis: anti-oxidant, liver tonic,

lung tonic

 

Licorice root-Glycyrrhiza glabra: anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial,

estrogenic

 

Please note that I tried to stick to the true meaning of essential

oil (exceptions: lemon and orange, wherein I chose the expressed

peels), and did not include a few of my " foods that I wouldn't want

to live without " because they are not truly classified as herbs.

These I list now:

 

Garlic-Allium sativum (considered a culinary vegetable in proper

classifications, popularly referred to as an herb): anti-biotic,

anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor

 

Capsicum annuuim (considered a fruit in proper classifications,

popularly referred to as an herb): anti-spasmodic, thermogenic

(enhancement of metabolic rate,) topical analgesic (an agent for

producing insensibility to pain)

 

Chlorella-Chlorella pyrendoidosa (single cell algae often confused

with herbs): natural chelator (remover of toxic chemicals and heavy

metals from the body), digestive, whole food source of vital nutrients

 

Reishi mushroom-Ganoderma lucidum: anti-bacterial, anti-histimine,

anti-viral

 

Cinnamon-Cinnamonum cassia (properly classified as a spice, not an

herb): astringent, carminitive, stomachic,

newly recognized as an anti-inflammatory

 

Of course, these are only the " tip of the iceberg " when it comes to

medicinal herbs and essential oils!

 

Thank you for this post, it made me seriously contemplate my

relationship with certain herbs, oils and whole foods and their

relationship to, not only my well-being, but the well-being of all of

those who are on the path to natural health! I am anticipating many

informed and impassioned responses from the members of this amazing

Sure, I'll offer my opinion.

 

The 10 most basic and *most* useful essential oils in my " medicine

cabinet " would be the best quality:

 

Lavender angustifolia

Eucalyptus radiata

Peppermint

Rosemary cineole

Lemon

German Chamomile

Roman Chamomile

Sweet Marjoram

Ginger (distilled from fresh rt.)

Tea Tree

 

I'd also suggest to add these though for an excellent basic kit. I

could not get by with out all of these:

Geranium, rose

Ylang Ylang

Sweet Orange

Juniper

Clary Sage

Cypress

Rose otto- or a bottle of Rose hydrosol if you want the Rose without

the price.

Helichrysum italicum (from Corsica)

 

You can make countless " remedy " blends with these 18 basics.

 

Next, I'd add these 8:

Jasmine, Neroli, Frankincense, Myrrh, Vetiver, Mandarin, and

Grapefruit, Basil, and some conifers ;-)

 

Now you are really having fun...

 

I'll add herbs to this later on after some sleep and more work...

it's hard for me to separate the emotional effects and the physical,

because the emotional affects the physical... but here's a start.

 

1. Helichrysum italicuum, from Corsica. for bruising, inflammation, skin

irritation and scarring. without any doubt at all in MY mind, it's the

most healing essential oil that exists.

2. Eucalyptus... probably an Unrectified Euc. Globulous... I have COPD

and it seems the most effective and the most gentle for bronchial problems.

3. Lavender (I'm allergic/sensitized to it, but it really needs to be on

anyone else's list.) I'd go with either a High Altitude French, or an

organic Mailette.

4. Frankincense... for respiratory, spiritual and emotional effects. up

until a few months ago, I'd have chosen a CO2 extract, today I'll go with a

steam distilled from Somalia.

5. Manuka ... I like it better than Tea Tree, for general anti-bacterial,

anti-viral, and anti-fungal effects. Tea Tree would be a substitute.

6. Ravensara Aromatica - with all the viruses floating around, it's a

powerful anti-virus and the BEST natural allergy 'calmer' I know of. an

essential for Flu season.

7. Peppermint - for anti-headaches, decongestion - great for sinus 'stuff'

8. Black Spruce - for respiratory support, to boost the immune

system. Also, for me at least, a WONDERFUL " de-stressor "

9. Rose Otto - Bulgarian - for any sort of " female problems " and for skin

care.

10. Not an essential oil....St. John's Wort infused oil.... for achy

joints, inflammation, aches and pains.

11. Black Pepper - to put in the above ;)

 

now... I suspect a lot of folks on this list will list one of the

oreganos.... Butch's " never fail big bad bug buster " has never been

effective for me... I've tried it several times, and ended up in the

hospital because I delayed seeing the doctor when I should have.

 

odd...it seems to work for a lot of people...I'm just not one of them.

I have to agree. I also like a very good Manuka better than *most* Tea

Tree oils too. Kanuka too. I do find Tea Tree useful though- but very

over used as it has become so popular. Another excellent broad range

essential oil I use quite a bit is Niaouli- Melaleuca quinquenervia-

excellent and quite gentle. Often overlooked.

I agree here too. I'd also have Ravensara aromatica in a basic kit. I

like it for upper respiratory infections, colds, many kinds of viruses,

etc.

Absolutely. A good cabinet will include some beautiful bright deep red

St. John's Wort blossoms infused in oil and Calendula infused in oil. I

use both of these herbal infusions A LOT! There are others too that I

use (Mullein, Arnica, Comfrey, etc) but these two I find the most use

for regularly and they are a pleasure to use- and to make. These are

also nice tinctured.
