Guest guest
Hey y'all, Since its getting around Halloween and such .. lemme tell y'all about a gal I still believe in today .. a gal I have never feared .. a gal who us younguns used to hold in great awe .. Kate .. the Bell Witch. Is Kate evil .. or is Kate just a spirit seeking justice? I have never thought of her as being evil. Kate haunted the little town of Adams, TN .. population around 250 or so even today .. its 7 miles down the road from my hometown of Guthrie, KY. The Bell Farm and the Bell Witch Cave are on the Red River in Adams .. and when I was a yonker me and my buddies would often spend the night on the Red River catfeeshing .. and when it rained .. we'd all run up the hill and sleep in the Bell Witch Cave. Not one time did we ever talk with disrespect while there .. and not one time did we ever have any problems with Kate. But .. in the summer of 1975 .. something strange happened .. and this tale is a fact .. if I'm lying .. I'm dying. I had just come back from an assignment in Hawaii .. and my old buddy and boss (Don) and his wife and two girls decided to take a trip from Texas up to Kentucky to visit with me and my family. Don was known to have a drink or three now and then .. and he was also an adventurous feller fer'shur. First day in town Don wanted to visit the Bell Witch Cave .. so I took him. Don was having a few nips at the time. ;-) When we arrived on site I told the present owners (who I've know for a long time) that my buddy had traveled from Texas to see the cave .. and since we were both military they took no fees .. but .. they did warn us to be respectful while in the cave. I knew that .. and when we were walking down the hill to the cave I told Don why it was important to not show disrespect to Kate. When we arrived in the cave .. all went well for a while .. then Don started laughing and made a remark about Kate that would get a man punched out if he made it to a live person. I was uncomfortable and told him so .. and demanded we leave .. which we did. When we got to the top of the hill .. Don opened his car and as he slide the keys into the ignition .. somehow he sliced his hand open badly .. we could not find anything there that could have done this .. but it happened. We wrapped the hand with a handkerchief and started to drive out the gravel road leading to the main road. The gravel road ran through an open pasture .. no trees and the grass was not more than a few inches tall. A few hundred yards up the road .. we see a young gal .. maybe 12-14 or so .. barefoot and in a plain print dress .. walking down the gravel road .. which gotta be tough even for a kuntry youngun. So Don stops and asks the gal if she wants a ride. " No Sir " , says she. " I'm not going very far " . But there is nowhere to go there. We start up again and haven't traveled more than 100 feet when I look into the rear view mirror .. and there is nobody there. I tell Don to stop the car .. he does .. and he looks .. and there is nobody on the road or in the field .. its flat ground there .. no dips and rises. Make what you will of this .. but it happened. I have many photos of the cave and surrounding property .. there are two Tennessee Highway Historical Markers in Adams .. both discuss the Bell Witch and Andrew Jackson .. and some other events that occurred in and around the area. Even the local Baptist Church is named the Bell Witch Baptist .. the school (now closed due to the new county central school system) was called the Bell Witch Elementary School .. the town cemetery is named " Bellwood " .. everything in the town of Adams, TN is Bell Witch this and that and the sign showing population and such entering and leaving has a witch on a broomstick on it. Hard it is to find someone in that town who will show disrespect for Kate. Andy Jackson wrote: " I would rather fight the entire British army single handed than face the Bell Witch again! " Andrew Jackson, seventh President Of The United States. http://www.bellwitch.org/home.htm More on the Bell Witch .. this is but a few URLs .. there are many. http://paranormal.about.com/library/weekly/aa101399.htm http://www.bellwitch.org/ http://www.bellwitch.org/story.htm http://nashville.about.com/od/historyandsites/a/bellwitch_2.htm http://www.prairieghosts.com/chris.html http://www.prairieghosts.com/b-cave.html A tale .. probably not true. http://www.themoonlitroad.com/bellwitch/intro_bellwitch.asp http://www.bellwitchcave.com/ http://www.ghosts.org/bell/bellwitch.html Happy Haunting Y'all. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
