Its baaaaaack ... The Herb of the Week :)

 

The herb of the week this week - October 24th - 30th is Fennel

(Foeniculum vulgare).

 

I will post various info about this wonderful herb all week, and I hope

that anyone who has any personal experience with this plant will not

hesitate to post about it too :-D

Foeniculum vulgare

Common name: fennel

 

Other names: sweet fennel, fennikel frø, aneth fenouil, fenouil,

foeniculi fructus, fenchel, bitterfenchel, finocchio, xian hui xiang

 

Description

An erect perennial herb, stout, aromatic, to about two metres, with

numerous 1-2 mm yellow flowers and 3-6 mm long brown fruits. Indigenous

to Europe and the Mediterranean; cultivated in India, China and Egypt;

naturalised in Australia and New Zealand, often as an invasive weed due

to its ability to self-sow and its resistance to drought and frost.

 

Historical use

Historically, Foeniculum vulgare was used as a diuretic; to aid in

conditions such as nausea, wheezing and dyspnoea, urinary stones,

jaundice and gout. It has also been used to aid menstruation and

delivery of the placenta, for longevity, and to deter fleas.

20 to 40 mL per week (1:2)

anorexia, colic, intestinal, dyspepsia, flatulent, flatulent colic,

lactation, poor, pharyngitis

galactagogue, orexigenic

anethole (essential oil), bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen), camphene,

coumarin, fenchone, fixed oil, kaempferol, limonene, phellandrene

(essential oil), pinene (essential oil), protein, quercetin glucosides,

resin, rutin, sterols, tannin
