Indigenous to Europe and the Mediterranean; cultivated in India, China and Egypt; naturalised in Australia and New Zealand, often as an invasive weed due to its ability to self-sow and its resistance to drought and frost. Historical use Historically, Foeniculum vulgare was used as a diuretic; to aid in conditions such as nausea, wheezing and dyspnoea, urinary stones, jaundice and gout. It has also been used to aid menstruation and delivery of the placenta, for longevity, and to deter fleas.
