EO's or treatments for Shingles

Hello, Everyone!

My Dad has a bad case of Shingles! He's never had them before. Does

anyone have any EO's or treatments for shingles? Most of the

mainstream medical pages don't have much to offer. His doc gave him

an antiviral prescription. I did read one article on the 'net that

says Geranium oil has been shown to be effective (one study). ANY

suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Sue, it isn't an e.o., and it isn't a herb, so

I guess it comes under etc.:).

The amino acid lysine has been known

to shorten the outbreak of shingles.

Good luck to your Dad, it is horrid.

Hi Sue,

This is from Advanced Aromatherapy by

Kurt Schnaubelt:

" When it comes to treating shingles, aromatherapy

has no competition. Applying a mixture of equal

parts ravensare and calophyllum directly to the

affected area several times a day will heal

it fast and painlessly. As with herpes, shingles

should be treated with aromatherapeutic measures as

soon as the characteristic pain occurs prior to

the outbreak of lesions. If the mixture is

applies at the first sign of shingles, an outbreak

can be avoided entirely or at the very least,

a significant worsening of symptoms can be

lessened.

Decisively repeated treatments using

essential oils will cause relapses to appear

less frequently and ultimately to disappear

entirely "

The calophylllum is Tamanu Oil.

Great book the way.

Don't know how much help this will be but you usually only have 1 out break of

Shingles but the pain can last long after it has healed. I've had them - no fun.

Wish I could be more help.

My favorite treatment for any Herpes family member is 2 grams of l-Lysine

and 5 grams of vitamin C orally daily plus Melissa officinalis tincture several

times daily and well diluted Melissa e.o. on the hurting area.

Hope this helps

You put the EO directly on the skin without diluting?

My dad had the shingles 2xs last year and once this year and each time he gets

it he is in a lot of pain. All the doctors have been able to do for him is pain

meds and an antiviral. My neighbor has had them at least 3xs. Usually in the

spring. The best thing you can do is get to the doctors. Its nothing to mess

around with.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is the herb and

essential oil of choice for many who suffer from any

form of the herpes virus; HSV 1 or 2, chicken pox,

shingles, EBV, etc. You can inhale the EO, take a

tincture, and also put the tincture on the site to

heal the lesions. This will be uncomfortable (due to

the alcohol content), but you can dilute it a bit with

water if necessary.

You don't want to use any preparations that will keep

the outbreak too moist; this will prolong the healing

process.

A great resource for the use of herbs in viral

infections such as herpes is Christopher Scipio, of

http://www.natropractica.com He has done some

fantastic work in the field, and is wonderful to talk

to.

Good luck!

This summer a friend's husband came down with Shingles.

In doing a quick search for something to help, I read

testimonials by other herbalists who used St John's Wort oil successfully.

I gave him some of that and returned a couple days later with

cayenne ointment to also try but he said the SJW oil worked

fine; he said it took about 20 minutes to kick in after dabbing it on, but

it definitely helped and he could sure tell when it wore off.

Personally I would do SJW and Lemon Balm tinctures internally

too, for their anti-viral properties.

I've never had shingles, and can only pass on what he said worked;

also have never tried the EOs, although I'm thinking about purchasing some

to have on hand after such good recommendations from folks here.
