I've noticed a few posts recently that I hadn't been able to answer at

the time I read them (and then forgot later) about oils, herbs, etc (no

pun intended ;) .. to use during the cold/ flu and potential epidemic

season.

This is what we use around here .. and yes, sometimes we don't get sick

at all and sometimes we do get sick (I'm convinced that usually for me

its my body MAKING me take a day or two or three off from my busy life

;) , but thankfully as of today I've not had to take an anti-biotic

since I was 17 and neither of my kids have ever taken an anti-biotic,

and my hubby hasn't taken one in several years (since right after he

started dating me ;) .. and that says something to me!

We ALWAYS have on hand Echinacea angustifolia root and Goldenseal root.

I make my own tinctures with them. I also have an Echinacea complex from

Weleda I keep on hand. Also, Horsetail for making tea. There is a kit of

homeopathic meds from my doc we have here too, but I don't tend to rely

on that quite as much as the herbs. Oh - Tabasco sauce is awesome on all

foods when sick - LOTS of it, with plenty of raw garlic too <grinz>

I ALWAYS have on hand Oregano oil (carvacrol type) and Lemon Myrtle. I

commonly make a blend of those two oils, Eucalyptus, Peppermint,

Rosemary (if its not bedtime), Sage, and Lavender. I'll toss other oils

in there too, but that is my basic " sick time, lets clean the air

blend " .

Also important is to limit refined sugar intake and alcohol intake as

they lower the immune system DRAMATICALLY!

During sick times it is good to avoid cow dairy as it increases mucous

production, and if you already have a sinus issue it just makes it

worse. Goat dairy doesn't have that problem. Too much protein when sick

is best to avoid too, as your body has to spend energy and hard work to

digest your protein intake when it can be putting that energy to better

uses making you better.

Visiting a chiropractor and getting massages can really help keep the

immune system functioning during the " cold and flu " season (or any time

for that matter) and balneotherapy also has very positive results.

Regular exercise can't be pushed to the bottom of the list either (even

though I just did that ;) It is VERY important to be active and keep

fit!

Oh, and of course, don't forget the basic rule of wash your hands

frequently and don't stick your fingers up your nose and in your eyes,

especially after you've been touching the pole on the subway train ;) !

All those things can help make us not so susceptible to BAD colds,

infections, epidemics, etc ....

I'd love to hear what everyone else does! :)

Great advice Chris! We do most of those things in our household as

well, ESPECIALLY STAYING AWAY FROM ANTI-BIOTICS! I get so upset when

I hear all of the mothers at my sons' schools talking about how

they " forced " their doc into prescribing antibiotics...and then they

wonder why the kid (and the rest of the family) is sick the ENTIRE

winter! Sorry, I could stay on this soap box for hours but will cut

it short ;)

Okay, so here is my two cents that I would like to add; okay, it is

more like ten cents but humor me ;) :

Besides eating a well balanced, nutritionally sound diet with a whole

foods supplement that I developed, we do the following:

We eat a lot of garlic and I heavily season our food with herbs and

spices. Most herbs and spices have natural anti-inflammatory and

anti-biotic properties. As a side note, if you eat a relatively

whole foods diet, then heavily seasoned foods do not cause you to

have the typical body odor associated with them. Body odor is

eliminated when you are in a toxic state, once you are cleaned

out...no odor!

We eat mostly organic, and NEVER eat beef or dairy that is not

organic. If you eat as close to organic as you possibly can you will

be amazed at how much stronger your immune system becomes! I teach

people that it is no more expensive to eat organically then it is to

eat the typical SAD (Simple American Diet). Example: One pound of

organic raisins is approx. $2.30 lb and one box of fruit roll ups is

$2.50 for what, about 10 ounces? I can stretch one pound of raisins

a heck of a lot farther and much healthier! This is just one

example, anyone interested in more info can contact me off-list.

I believe in eating a lot of hearty soups and stews in the winter. I

live in Michigan and would never make it thru an ice storm without my

chicken enchilada soup ;)

I never turn the heat up past 68 degrees. I also try to open the

windows on the days that we do get nice, bright sunshine (of course I

turn the heater off because it is still freezing outside!) but I

think it is important to air out the house even in winter! And

CHANGE THOSE FURNACE FILTERS REGULARLY!

I also am always making sure there is enough moisture in the air.

Dried out nasal passages are a sure ticket to the flu! Even

something as simple as setting a bowl of water in a room helps, you

would be amazed at how fast it evaporates even without heat!

This year we are going to splurge on a serious hepa room filter for

the family room. I can't take another winter of soot in the air from

the fireplace (our main source of heat in winter) and diffusing eo's

cuts the smell but not the soot!

Speaking of eo's, we regulary diffuse them into the air. We like

many different blends, but I make sure to use oregano (carvacrol ct.)

at least once a week to " clean the air " !

Speaking of cleaning, we do not use toxic chemicals to clean in our

house! It chills me to the bone to think of the toxins under most

people's kitchen sink! When you use the " typical " cleaning products

that most Americans use, you are severely compromising the health of

your family! Most of those chemicals are PROVEN neurotoxins,

carcinogens and are immunosuppressant!

If you live in the Northern section of the country like I do, make

sure you get enough full spectrum light exposure. SAD, seasonal

affective disorder is a real ailment and even mild depression has

been linked to compromised immunity! There are plenty of links on

the web with more info.

And, finally, stay HYDRATED! Most people only think of becoming

dehydrated during the steaming summer months, but it is just as easy

to lose too much body fluids during the winter! Drink purified water

(do not drink " tap " water, it is highly polluted!) Especially make

sure that your children are drinking enough pure water while at

school! Send in a water bottle and DEMAND that the teacher allows

them to drink it during class. FORBID THEM FROM USING THE DRINKING

FOUNTAINS AT SCHOOL! Besides the toxic chorine levels found in most

municipal waters systems, many germs are ingested by " swapping spit "

at public drinking fountains!

I hope this helps many stay well and I sincerely thank Chris for

opening this thread because it is so important for people to stay

informed for the health of themselves and their families! Warm

regards and continue to be!

Great thread !

I agree with everything Lori said and do most of it.

My trusty daily wild bluegreen algae pretty much takes care of immunity, as well

as filling in any gaps in nutrition.

For immunity, it has been proven to stimulate

the movement of natural killer cells from the

blood into the tissues.

Sort of like encouraging the cops to actually

patrol the streets instead of sitting ready in the

patrol car.

The few times when I start feeling the first

inkling of a cold, I take some of my own very concentrated Echinacea Purpurea

root tincture.

It usually does the trick.

The last time I had a cold was almost two years ago, and I know exactly what

caused it:

dehydration, fatigue, inertia, lack of fresh air, junk food.

I will order some of Butch's oregano soon

to have one more weapon in case some

super bug rears its head, or the Spanish

flu escapes the lab where some mad scientists

have recreated it.

The more natural weapons, the better!
