Help for IBS

Hi

After reading Candy's post I realise that my IBS was a doddle! Still, I went

through lots of different prescriptions not to mention the barium enema (

never knew how much wind a body could hold!) I was told it was

stress.....great news after having a hose in your nethers in fromt of

strangers ! However, I found that certain foods were fine sometimes and at

others I instantly went into stomach cramps and pain, along with diahorrea

and terrible gas. In the 80's amidst all the diets that were going around

was the one where you did not combine carbohydrates and protein. I tried it

for about 4 months and not only lost weight, but also the IBS was no longer

such a problem. I still have a sensitive digestive system, but it has

certainly improved to what it was.

Mind you, I have cut down dairy and wheat, and now I also find as I have

become older, I am more aware of my limitations when I am eating.

Perhaps it was coincidence, but I still had all my stress, but I think that

I was not putting so much pressure on my digestive tract and it was able to

heal. I certainly felt different after a few months.

<SNIPPED>

Jeanine,

Bless your heart! I believe the barium enema is worse than having IBS!!!

<YIKES!> I had *1* barium enema during my entire life. The last time I was

hospitalized, the doc I was using at the time supposedly couldn't finish the

colonoscopy....long story. Anyway, a week after I was released from the

hospital, I went to the doc for my follow up appointment. He wanted to send

me for a barium enema.

I explained to him about the one (and ONLY) barium enema I'd had. (I've had

some *serious* pain in my life, but I swear this had to be like one of the

absolute WORST experiences I've had to date.) I told him that I would

rather have my arms and legs ripped out of socket, and be beaten to death

with them, than to have another B.E. He absolutely REFUSED to try another

colonoscopy or to do any other testing. It would be the barium enema, or

nothing, according to him.

To this, I calmly replied....It would be NOTHING, and I would find another

GI doc that had a little more compassion instead of inflicting more

suffering on their patients. I walked out of his office, and I will never

return. My new GI doc is much more understanding, and he actually BELIEVES

in using 'more' natural treatment when possible. I am very happy of that.

Never think your IBS was 'minor' or what have you.....It's a very real, very

painful condition. For some it's more of an inconvenience, but it's still

rough.

I'm glad to hear that it's gotten better for you though!

Take good care!

Candy

Yeeha! An empowered patient.

Three cheers.

I don't care what the issue is, we all need to

take more responsibility for our own bodies.

Hey....in this day and age, you MUST be proactive in your health care, or

you will be terribly sorry. I've never had any formal medical

training....other than CPR certification, but I read and study anything

medical I can get my hands on. This is SOLELY for the purpose of knowing

enough to tell when the MD's are feeding me a line of bull...

It's actually come in really handy several times. I've also caught possible

(bad) medication interactions when my doctor and the pharmacist missed it.

<sheesh!>

I would so much prefer to find a natural remedy or a practitioner that deals

in natural or alternative type medicine, but I don't know of one in my

area....plus even if I could find one, my health insurance wouldn't cover an

alternative doc. <sigh> And, we simply cannot afford to pay for it out of

pocket. So, I must continue seeing traditional MD's when I cannot fix my

problem myself. :(

At least my GI doc does use natural products when possible. That's a good

thing.

Hugs,

Candy
