Guest guest
My family swears by this in the winter. Kristerae's Elderberry-rosehip syrup from dried berries 2 cups elderberries (mt rose 8 oz pack) ½ cup rosehips 4 cups water 2 TBSP wild cherry bark root of Echinacea-wildcraft root of LICORICE 1 ½ inch piece tsp marshamallow root tsp coltsfoot tsp boneset dash of cinnamon juice of 1 lemon 1/3 cups raw honey if you can get it vodka to preserve I soak the berries a couple hours then pour into a pan and add 4 cups water and simmer and mash for awhile. Also add all the roots at this time and wild cherry bark. They will need to macerate longer than the leaf herb. I am terrible at writing things down and go by looking at the liquid. I keep adding water to the berries to get more juice but I dont want it weak. so start with 4 cups water and add if you think it could use more water. (sorry about that poor direction) after simmerring 35 minutes or more, add the herbs that are left to add. cover an dlet sit 20 minutes or more. The strain and SQUEEZE all the juice out of the berries. and discard the berries and roots. Save all of the liquid of course and pour back into the pan. add your honey and just lightly warm the honey so it dissolves to ensure the nutritional content stays intact. pour into your jars. Adding the vodka will depend on each individual taste. If I am pouring into a quart jar, I actually add 1/8 to 1/4 of the jar of vodka. But if you would not like alcohol in your formula, as long as you keep it in the refrigerator it will keep awhile. I store all of my syrup in the fridge and still put the alcohol in it because I make several quarts at a time and I want it to last and I also enjoy the way it makes me feel. It can help a sick person drift off into a nice sleep by the calming actiuon of a little toddy. I ahve used sugar before when I was out of honey. If you like thick syrup, cook down the juice just as you would making jelly.
