Hi Bev,

Here's a good reference to the traditional recipes and uses of elder berry.

http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/e/elder-04.html

References in old herbals can be found in Italian, Dutch, Portuguese,

Croat-Slovak, German, Austrian, Swiss and Hungarian. It is almost a

universal plant. Conrad von Megenberg (1309-1374) first mentioned elder

berry juice to increase resistance to illness. The berries were regularly

incorporated into food and condiments for coloring and flavoring and for

making preserves, wines, winter cordials and for adding color and flavor to

other fruit wines. Native to Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia,

there are over 20 species many with similar chemical constituents. Sambacus

nigra L. (family Caprifoliaceae) is the most prevalent species and the one

that grows here in the Pacific Northwest. Modern herbalism has shown that

the standardized preparation 2:1 increased hamagglutination inhibition

titers to influenza B. In vitro it has inhibited replication of four types

of human influenza viruses, three type B influenza viruses and three type A

animal strains. I have the most recent paper from the American Botanical

Council and elder berry shows little contraindication, except that one must

be careful to use the fully ripe berries.

Here are some specific quantities for making the syrup

the colds/flu to start with.

Hi Bev,

I don't usually feel concerned about my immune system, but this year

for some reason, I intuitively feel that I need to boost it. Don't

mean to sound paranoid, but there's some weird stuff floating

around! Right after I joined the gym last month, I got the flu.

First time I've been sick in years. Don't want to risk it again!

So, when I found out last Thursday that I'm going to Egypt for two

weeks, it was off to the vitamin store for me!

I decided on the " Wellness Herbal Resistance Liquid " by Source

Natural. Lots of good herbal allies. Picked up " Airborne " for the 11

hour flight from JFK to Cairo and, I'm taking along my GSE just to

have handy.

That outta cover it! I'm also a big fan of Reishi and Maitake

mushrooms. Great immunity builders.

Take care, and be well,

Michelle
