soappmaking and lye

I have not made soap for even more than 25 yrs.so have not read the emails

about making soap. I do not know how anyone could make soap without lye. In

my day, I used beef fat and put it on the stove to render. It made

wonderful soap, and I always figured it was powerful. I think to make soap

now, if

there is no lye available, it will be necessary to go back to some very old

recipe and use ashes. Why is the lye gone???? I really was not some wizard

at this, and a lot of times the soap was kind of brittle. Please let me

know why the lye dissapeared. sharon

Hi. I don't think anyone actually read my e-mail about red devel substitutes.

 

Lye is NOT being no longer manufactured. it is just the Red Devil brand that is

being doscontinued. Lye is sodium hydroxide AKA Caustic Soda and is availabke in

hundreds or even thougsnds of places

 

Just google for caustic soda .. and use google local to get your local supplier

for " Caustic soda " or " sodium hydroxide "

 

There is NO danger of you all not being able to get " lye " to make real soap.

Lye hasn't disappeared. Red Devil has stopped production. It isn't the

only lye out there.

We always used a bag of caustic soda to get a septic tank started. Threw it

in bag and all. It is out there.
