Guest guest
How to choose quality herbs Once upon a time the local health food store in our small town was staffed by a sad woman, who would really have preferred to be somewhere else. The glass gallon jars on the shelves were filled with bulk herbs that looked as forlorn and lifeless as their owner. The herbs had lost their color, and emanated a sense of futility. In this case, the herbs were clearly visible. When you buy pre-packaged herbs, you have to take the company's word that you are getting your money's worth. Many factors go into creating a quality product. For total control, try processing your own wildcrafted or homegrown plants! Here are some factors to keep in mind when purchasing herbs. Quality depends on the soil. Do the herbs come from soil that is pure and rich with compost, or from soil that is depleted and contaminated with pesticides? You are what your food eats. Quality depends on the harvest A living herb is a bio-energetic entity, with vibrational qualities that go beyond the list of chemical ingredients. Are your herbs picked carefully, with respect? Or are they harvested mechanically with a noisy, polluting machine? Quality depends on identification Are steps taken at many moments in the process to insure that the batch of herbs contains the desired species, without contamination? Quality depends on import practice Many potent herbs come into North America from elsewhere. They are customarily fumigated or irradiated at entry in order to kill any undesirable life forms. Manual inspection is possible, but expensive! Have your exotic herbs been sprayed or fumigated, or were they painstakingly inspected by hand? Quality depends on processing method The healing phytochemicals of herbs are often encased in a fibrous matrix that makes them inaccessible to the body. In order to make them bio-available, they have to be extracted. The fibrous portion of the plants, rich in minerals and trace minerals, is usually discarded. A rare process known as spagyrics, or plant alchemy, transforms the fibrous mass into a very fine ash that is then re-combined with the extracts. This process also takes into account the phases of the Moon, and other cosmic rhythms. It takes weeks, and is worth waiting for. For more detail, spagyric Do your herbal products offer you the energy of the WHOLE plant, or only part? Have your plants been processed in harmony with Nature's rhythms? Quality depends on testing Once the plants have been extracted and compounded into a formula samples should be taken to insure consistent quality. Are your herbs subject to stringent quality control?
