TEXAS, USA, July 11, 2005: Curcumin, the yellow pigment found in the

curry spice turmeric, inhibits melanoma cell growth and kills tumor

cells, shows a new study. Previous studies have already demonstrated

that the spice has an anti-cancer effect. The new research, published

online today (

August print issue of Cancer, also reveals how curcumin acts against

this type of tumor. Researchers led by Razelle Kurzrock of the

University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center in Houston treated three

melanoma cell lines with curcumin at different doses and for different

duration. Results show that curcumin treatment decreased cell viability

in all three cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. Epidemiological

studies have linked high consumption of turmeric to lower rates of

breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and c olon cancer.

I have been working with Dr. Agarwal in M.D.Anderson for some time now.

He is really passionate about finding out the good stuff hiding in our

spices, herbs and grannie's formulations,

Hey Chris,

I guess I'm on " the other list " too. Anyhow, that

article got me looking for recipes (for meals) that

included turmeric.

Anyone have any favorites?

Just about any recipe :)

I put turmeric in/on just about everything... I like to coat baked or

roasted potato or yam wedges in olive oil, sprinkle them with

turmeric and dried ginger, and then a little tamari.

Add turmeric to your red pasta sauce -- you'll never notice it. I

also like to add dulce other other seaweeds to red sauce, because I

want the benefit but am not a big fan of the taste.

Hi Judy (from both lists ;)

Ya know what .. I've been snoozing on our herb of the week (lazy

summer mode) and I think I've been inspired to do turmeric now! I'll

gather a bunch of yummy recipes and turmeric info and start posting!

PS - are you in the Houston area???

There was a little snippet on our local news a while back (within the

last couple weeks) about turmeric being a possible protection against

cancer.
