Guest guest
Hi Marge, Please elaborate! Here in TX (and when I was in CO too) it is legal to sell a perfume or linen spray, etc .. made with pure grain alcohol that has NOT been denatured , but I know that in some other states you must use a denatured alcohol in the product for it to be legal to sell. I would LOVE to know more about how to either make naturally denatured alcohol with EO's or where to get denatured alcohol that ins't full of synthetic chemicals! Thanks for any heads up on this *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com On Behalf Of Marge Clark At 07:18 PM 7/20/2005, you wrote: >Denatured ethanol is created by >adding synthetic chemicals into the pure drinkable alcohol. So why >claim it is OG but then let out that you are using a chemical???? some formulas for denatured alcohol call for synthetic chemicals. Others call for.... would you believe.... ESSENTIAL OILS. so... an organically produced grape or grain alcohol, denatured with organic essential oils, could still be appropriately labeled organic. I don't think you can legally make it yourself (the BATF is NOT easy to deal with!) but in the past we imported grain alcohol that was denatured with lavender and bergamot. there's a page on the batf website (I'll see if I can find it) which gives the different 'numbers' of SDA and the denaturing agent. http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/05dec20031700/edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr\ _2003/aprqtr/27cfr21.151.htm gives a list of the legally allowed denaturants. anise oil bay oil (which one?) bergamot cedar leaf cinnamon (which?) citronella oil eucalyptus oil glycerine (not an eo obviously, but a vegetable product) Lavender oil peppermint oil pine needle oil pine oil pine tar rosemary oil sassafras oil spearmint oil spike lavender oil for SDA 38-b the formula is " for 100 gallons of alcohol, add 10 lbs of essential oils " (rough quote) one also has to have a license to produce it. now... some of the eo's must be NF (national formulary)...and odds are are NOT totally natural eo's. however, some are supposed to be " natural " essential oils. so... saying that denatured alcohol is 'full of synthetics " is a bit out of line. It MIGHT be...but it also might not be. also, be VERY careful about purchasing and storing SDA in quantity. It can have a very bad effect on your property insurance rates.
