Guest guest
So... in a nutshell, the ylang ylang oil I have reminds me of ant spray. I've never smelled any other ylang ylang oils, so I don't know if it's all like this and ylang ylang just isn't for me, or if this is a sign of an oil gone bad, or what. Any ideas? -Josh
Guest guest
Hi Josh,, Ylang Ylang is one of those oils that definitely needs to be diluted (VERY HEAVY floral scent!!! Did I say VERY HEAVY? *lol*), and it can be either " right on " or " way off " IMHO. This is due to a few reasons, including general quality, but the main one being - unlike many oils, by routine practice, there are several distillations of this oil. There is Ylang Ylang Complete, then there is Ylang Ylang Extra, and Ylang I and Ylang II and Ylang III and I've experienced that when done not right some of them can smell yucky and burnt even! Everything except the " Complete " oil is what is called " fractionated " . Generally speaking (as there is no real " standard " ) Ylang Extra is from the initial distillation which is done for just a short time (an hour or so). Ylang I is from the first distillation, several hours into the process. Ylang II is from the second distillation. Ylang III from the third, which is done over at least a day ... all have a different scent. In altogether too many cases it isn't presented which Ylang " grade " a person is getting - its just known as Ylang Ylang ... so for example, you may hate Ylang Ylang III but love Ylang Ylang Extra .... List mate Marge did an AGORA article about Ylang Ylang http://www.naturesgift.com/agora/ylangylang.htm I'm off to bed now! Nite y'all! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com On Behalf Of Joshua Alexander So... in a nutshell, the ylang ylang oil I have reminds me of ant spray. Guest guest
Hehe... thanks. Yeah, it's so very strong. So is ant spray. Mine is the Complete kind. Neat article... thanks for the link, and thanks to Marge for writing it. Best, Josh

I detest it, but have learned to use it, because it magically transforms a perfume. It is undetectable if blended wisely, and marries all the florals together in a great olfactory party. Someone once made a joke about it on my group, calling it " creeping death " . I couldn't agree more! I could never use it straight, or in a simple blend where it was detectable. http://naturalperfumery.com The premier site on the Web to discover the beauty of Natural Perfume " The Age of the Foodie is passé. That is so funny, because after reading the posts concerning ylang ylang, I went and took a good whiff of a ylang ylang sample that I had gotten with my last eo order from Butch--the first thing I thought was that it smelled like my grandmother, when she was about 86 yrs old. Guest guest
Hey Josh, I personally thought that I hated ylang when I first started out in this eo stuff. I got a 1, 2 and 3 distillation. I thought they were obnoxious! To me it was like a bad rubber smell or something, but now that you mentioned ant spray, hmmm...maybe. Some of my family members and friends love it though! I LOVE Ylang complete and extra! It is strong and best not to sniff it straight out of the bottle. One of my most popular soaps and hand creams is scented with a very simple ylang and orange combo. Go lighter with the ylang as Anya has said, and it will definately work for things other than perfume as well imho. Something I am learning is that everyones sniffer and preferences are very different. All oils are not for all people! Guest guest
I've been around some pretty good Ylangs and some really raunchy ones. Back before I knew much about them, I purchased a bottle of Aura Cacia brand in a dusty little health food store. It was Ylang ylang III and when I got it home and opened it, it smelled remarkably like luncheon meat gone slightly " off. " I opted not to use it in AT or skincare, as I seriously doubt the healthful benefit of anything that puts one in mind of greenish bologna.... jaime, CA
Guest guest
This conversation is really interesting to me because I've been buying Ylang Ylang III for blending in soap scenting for about 7 years now and I've never had a bottle that smelled anything but very nice. I wonder if it is my luck or just a difference in our noses. Now I'm really curious about what Complete and I and II smell like!
