Guest guest
howdy everybody, I've been using plain old white vinegar in the final rinse for my baby diapers and have occassionally used it on clothes when I run out of my " 7th Generation " fabric softener. The Urban US being what it is, I cannot hang my clothes in any practical fashion so I haven't gone full throtle with pitching the over priced commercial softeners and just using a vinegar rinse (the dryer doesn't always get the vinegar smell out like hanging would ... i smell weird enough as it is!). I had thought about adding some EO to the vinegar, but had no idea if this was a safe thing to do (visions of 5th grade vinegar and baking soda " volcano " science projects come to mind!). Then I stumbled on this website that even gives recipes: http://www.aquasapone.com.au/recipes/eovinegar.html Seeing this web page makes me feel like I am at least not the only idiot out there considering such a thing. I just wanted to double check as we all know there's a lot of half-boiled info on the web. I also would want to use lavender and citrus EO's (but not at the same time) and noticed that the above website recommended blends with Lemon Myrtle and Lemon Tea Tree and am wondering if using a straight citrus (Lemon, Orange) is a NO-NO with vinegar? (or if they are just trying to promote their Australian EOs?). Lavender seems like the first scent to want to stick in your clothes so I suspect the formulas are to promote the EOs that they sell but please correct me if I am wrong and shouldn't use Lavender! Assurances that my vinegar & EO blend ONLY for laundry and not eating it or putting it directly on anyone's skin!!! THANK YOU!!! ~Bonnie
Guest guest
I love using scents in my vinegar. I use both essential oils and fragrance oils. Some fragrances I have that didn't quite behave in CP soap are now used in my downy ball with vinegar. Guest guest
Bonnie, Another thing you could do is put dehydrated orange (or lemon or other citrus) peels into a gallon of your vinegar and let steep. I put dried orange peels in my rinsing vinegar all the time because it smells so much better than just vinegar. To keep the orange peels from going in the washer I just hold my fingers over the spout as I pour. Hope that idea helps. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, This is a late reply because I was on holiday for two weeks. I've used white vinegar with EO as final rinse for about 6 years now. I just put a bit of vinegar in the space where you would put the fabric softener in your washing machine (about 1/4 th of the maximum level to fill) and add a few drops of EO, I mostly use about 8 drops of lavendin (Lavendula hybrida). Works great! Love, Saskia
Guest guest
I have a question about adding eo's to the washing machine, even in vinegar. Won't this practice eventually (sooner rather than later) deteriorate the rubber gaskets in the washing machine? Barb
Guest guest
because of the small amount of EO used, the machine will probably die a natural death way before the rubber gaskets are affected. One load uses how many gallons of water ? I think my machine uses 10 or 12 gallons to fill it so any EO's will greatly diluted Paula .......... in Michigan I have a question about adding eo's to the washing machine, even in vinegar.
