This court decision has relevance to similar legislation on fragrance ingredients. Now that the food supplements industry in Europe has lost their battle, this means no one is going to challenge European Commission decisions on essential oil restrictions, at the European court. It is now looking increasingly likely that the sale of neat Tea tree oil will in the near future be banned as well as its use in many products. My guess is that will be followed by other essential oils. You think this wont happen in the USA - watch this space! Martin Watt http://www.aromamedical.com Please only email me via my website not this Lycos address ========================== Published: Tue, 12 Jul 2005 The EU's highest court has ruled in favour of tough new Europe wide controls in the health supplements market. The proposal - known as the EU food supplements directive - bans around 200 food supplements across the EU and puts restrictions on the upper limits of vitamin doses. Under laws backed by the European Court of Justice on Tuesday supplements will only be able to include vitamins and minerals from an approved list. Vitamins taken off the list include boron and sulphur, and 1000mg Vitamin C tablets. Tuesday's ruling goes against an opinion delivered by the same court's advocate-general in April, which argued that the law should be scrapped due to procedural anomolies. The judges have now backed new laws saying in a statement that: " A 'positive list' system is appropriate for securing the free movement of food supplements and ensuring the protection of human health. " The directive, approved by EU governments in 2002, is designed to regulate the fast growing market in " health food " products, including natural remedies, vitamin supplements and plant extracts. BEUC, the European consumers organisation welcomed the ruling as " a clear victory for European consumers and for the EU's right to regulate on the safety of food products. " The Food Supplements Directive is due to come into force on August 1 this year.

Below is a sample letter. Dear Congressman _______, I am very concerned about the coming CAFTA vote and this summary will explain to you and your Legislative Advisors just what CAFTA brings. CAFTA membership sets the US up for excessive, restrictive, global trade guidelines for vitamins and minerals as just passed 7/4/05, in the 28th General Session of the UN's Codex Alimentarius Commission. No one has believed that this could happen here. If you agree to CAFTA, you will be party to bringing this nightmare to our country. This is something your constituents will be extremely upset to have passed. It will affect us all! Imagine coming down with a cold and going to the drug or health food store to buy Vitamin C, 1000 or even 500 milligrams, finding that it is illegal! International agreements have been passed, which we will be forced to obey, if we are signatory to CAFTA. They lower available vitamin dosages to non-effective amounts and replace natural with ineffective synthetics. My friends, family, co-workers and the people of this country are closely watching this issue. Guest guest
I think some clarification is needed here b/c it was my understanding from the original post that it was the EU that passed the " anti-vitamin C " laws and this petition Chris just posted is attributing it to the UN and Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)?? I think this is a bait and switch of the extreme right to get more people to side with their " end of American Independence and way of life " hogwash regarding international cooperation. While I do not want to see Vitamin C becoming illegal this seems like there is a bit of smoke and mirrors going on here. How exactly does the Central American Free Trade Agreemtn CAFTA have anything to do with the EU? At the very least, I would be careful about actually sending the below message to your congressional representatives as it seems to be incorrect in attributing the EU's new laws to the UN (and then trying to pass that off onto the upcoming CAFTA vote ... which seems to be a confusing stretch) ... unless I missed something and the UN actually did pass a new guideline .... is that what the EU's ruling was based on?? I guess I need to go find more articles related to this ... I don't have time right now, but I'll share anything I uncover. If anyone has any further information The whole world has gone mad. It IS something in the water, isn't it??? - " Christine Ziegler " <chrisziggy Wednesday, July 13, 2005 11:49 AM RE: Latest on vitamins-oils next? Guest guest
Here ya go Bonnie - a link to the U.S. Codex Office http://tinyurl.com/96pum The aim of Codex is to " harmonise " world food trade/standards - http://tinyurl.com/9dkjv this one takes you to " Understanding the Codex Alimentarius " " From their beginnings, FAO and WHO have assisted in the improvement of quality and safety standards applied to food. The highest priority of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, as stated in Article 1 of its statutes, is to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade " Note the words " safety standards " in the above sentence........ The EU Supplement Directive was passed on the basis of " consumer safety " and applies to all of the EU. Under Codex harmonisation this - so called - " consumer safety " measure will (eventually) applied to all Countries that are members of the WHO (World Health Organisation) Check here http://tinyurl.com/8bols for Member Countries....... http://tinyurl.com/aphhn takes you to the WHO deliberations and reports on suppliments........ Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, There is language in CAFTA mandating that the US " harmonize with CODEX " . . .. http://www.alliance-natural-health.org/index.cfm?action=Events & ID=54 http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/showthread.php?t=88941 http://www.thelibertycommittee.org/update07.13.05.htm http://weblog.vitaminlady.com/blog/_archives/2005/7/8/1007536.html In addition to this step backwards for health choice and freedom, there are already disturbing human rights issues that suggest we should oppose CAFTA. Some webs to peruse on this: http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20040202 & s=engler (a good report in the Nation from Mark Engler) http://www.wola.org/economic/cafta.htm http://www.citizen.org/trade/cafta/ http://www.cispes.org/english/Campaign_Against_CAFTA_FTAA/ http://www.stopcafta.org/ http://www.aflcio.org/issuespolitics/globaleconomy/cafta_ftaa_main.cfm Be well, Marcia Elston, Samara Botane, http://www.wingedseed.com " First of all, cultivate a contented spirit; a garden is a good place to begin.
