Guest guest
Hi folks, Anyone have experience using essential oils with cats? My friend's poor kitty has scratched some of her fur off... friend is doing the poison powder thing and vacuuming daily, but would like to know if there are any natural ways to help the cat out. -Josh
Guest guest
could the cat have a bad case of fleas? Or ringworm? Both can make the cat scratch like mad. I would take the cat to the vet and see first what is causing her to scratch so much. Guest guest
Hi Josh, EO's CANNOT safely be used with felines. Their bodies don't metabolize them and it can very seriously damage them. Some hydrosols are safer to use then EO's but they too should be used sparingly and with caution. Visit Sue's (Lavender Cat) web site http://www.thelavendercat.com/ for some great info on EO's and cats. Not a " natural " remedy, but truly that Advantage stuff (and ONLY that particular product, not the knock off look alikes) works really well, is relatively benign. As for the house - vacuum daily for two weeks changing the bag after each vacuum (a small price to pay to get rid of fleas) will disrupt the life cycle of the flea and eliminate their breeding in the house .. Those 2 things combined really help us nip a flea problem in the bud! And I am VERY picky and cautious about what I do with the kids, pets and household! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com On Behalf Of Joshua Alexander Hi folks, Anyone have experience using essential oils with cats? Guest guest
I used to work for a vet clinic, and there was a service that was offered for about $150 to get rid of fleas. It was called fleabusters. BAsially, they sprinkle your carpeting with borax. Yup, 10 mule team borax. It acts as a dessicant, and dries out your carpet and the flea. It doesn't hurt your kitties or dogs. You work it in to the carpet with a broom. Takes about a week. You don't have to reapply this season, although I did because I mistakenly vaccummed too soon (don't vacccum for a week or so). Guest guest
Yes, this is an cheap, nontoxic way to dry them out. BUT be very careful with vacuuming up the borax. I used this method about 10 years ago in a house we lived in with old shag carpet and ended up with so much borax in the carpet that a white cloud of dust was created every time I vacuumed. My husband ended up having to be hospitalized for several weeks with a mysterious respiratory illness. The doctors couldn't figure it out, but I believe it was the borax in his system. Just be careful, please. Guest guest
Thanks! Forwarding your folks' emails to her. She knows it's a flea problem, and she's doing some of the suggestions... hopefully the extras do the trick. >EO's CANNOT safely be used with felines. Guest guest
Hi Josh, After a vet check -- have your friend look into nutrition for cats as well. Topical products can only do so much if nutrition is ignored. Cats are carnivores and though some do well on kibble, this is not their choice of food. Many do end up with skin troubles (as well as other ailments). For eo/hydrosol and cats, please visit Sue's website http://www.thelavendercat.com If the trouble is fleas, have your friend contact some holistic vets -- they will be able to guide him/her. Good luck & hope all will work out for the kitty.
