Hi Karen,

 

Is the seat in San Diego? You might be better off trying to find a friend

or someone else involved in this project who will drive it (would take

another van or small truck) from SD (or anywhere in SoCal) to Flagstaff . .

.. not *that* far a drive and perhaps less expensive than crating and

shipping (I am sure you would have to have a wood crate) . . . just a

thought.

TAN: Help to ship large item

 

 

Hi all,

 

I need some suggestions, please, on how to ship something that's

rather large, in one piece, and heavy. The item in question: the

removeable back seat to a minivan.

 

" Huh? " you say? Here's the story... my boyfriend Scott and his buddy

Robb are doing officiating for the Race Across AMerica

(http://www.raceacrossamerica.org), which is the bicycle race that

goes from San Diego, CA to Atlantic City, NJ. They rented a minivan

so they could do their thang, and Scott had taken out the back seat

and left it in his garage so they could have more room for coolers,

bags, etc.

 

Well, Scott called me tonight and said " we had a really eventful

day " . Uh-oh. That usually means something happened with the racers,

but what happened was that their minivan developed a mechanical

problem. Fortunately, it didn't break down in the middle of nowhere

and they were able to find a local Budget Rent a Car office where

they were in Flagstaff, AZ, and trade it in for a different van.

Problem is, Budget wants their back seat back! The new minivan is a

different manufacturer and model than the first one, so they couldn't

just swap the back seat from the new one. Anyway, so somehow the

boys have to get this thing packed up and shipped to Flagstaff.

 

Have any of you ever had to ship something big and heavy? How did

you do it? UPS? USPS? Some other kinda ground transportation

service? I can't imagine my mailman being happy to haul the thing

around. How did you get it packed? The guys already figure it'll be

inconvenient and expensive, but they're also hoping that Budget has

some kind of plan for this kind of eventuality or will be willing to

split the cost or something. Whatever the deal, it needs to happen

in the next week or so. The boys will be back on Saturday (they're

not going all the way across to NJ).

 

Any and all suggestions welcome!
