Isopropyl Myristate, commonly referred to as " IPM " is the ester of

Isopropyl

Alcohol and Myristic Acid. Isopropyl Myristate is used in cosmetic and

topical medicinal preparations where good absorption through the skin is

desired. Add to Lotions, Creams, Conditioners, Conditioning Shampoos,

Scrubs, Body Butters, Balms, etc. It adds a slip to products.

Hi Linda, Chris:

 

Years ago a derm was on TV warning about isopropyl myristate causing

acne. He said if you even have it in rinse-off hair conditioners it

can cause cystic acne on the neck and hairline. It is used for " slip "

texture, not absorption, I think, although absorption may be a

secondary usage: it's used in rust penetrants! Here are some links on

Heck! I replied to this this morning and it didn't show up on the list.

 

Years ago I saw a derm on TV warning about the major causes of acne.

Isopropyl myristate was in the top 3. I googled some sites earlier and

posted the URLs, but you can find more by typing in " isopropyl

myristate " acne.

 

Even using it in a wash-off product like hair conditioner can cause

cystic acne on the scalp and neck and shoulders.
