Guest guest
Hi Marge, Chris, and all List Members, This discussion on Bitter Orange, Petitgrain, and Neroli has finally dragged me out of lurkdom. I agree with both of you on the powerful anti-anxiety properties of Neroli and no, unfortunately the properties of Petitgrain are not the same. However, there is a wonderful essential oil that is called Petitgrain Sur Fleur (Citrus x aurantium var. amara) that is made with the twigs, leaves, and blossoms of the plant. My first experiences with this oil made me think that it was just a very nice Petitgrain and straight out of the bottle that is what it reminds me of, but if you put some on a scent strip and let it dry down a bit the Neroli part comes out strong and clear. It is truly an amazing oil in my opinion and the cost of Petitgrain Sur Fleur is closer to a Petitgrain instead of the rather expensive (but so worth it) Neroli. If anyone would like the name of my source they can write me privately or if the List Mom gives me permission I will post it here for everyone. Rosanne Taylor Bothell, WA > Of all three oils and their myriad effects, the most striking in my > experience is the anti-anxiety effect of Neroli. (so THAT's why brides carry orange blossoms!) Neroli is truly amazing for that! I also find it great for school work. Its not a " remembrance " oil like Rosemary, but it does cut down on the anxiety of taking tests and it also really seems to help perk you up in draining situations. > For anyone who suffers from anxiety or panic attacks, I have seen amazing results by the use of Neroli by inhalation. (most authorities say that petitgrain can be substituted. I am not at all sure that this is correct.) I also have to question the assessment that Petitgrain is as good as Neroli for anxiety attacks. I have to agree with your observations Marge! > *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com

Many, many of my pregnancy and birthing blends contain some Neroli- either in a starring role or in the background. In general it is wise to avoid any essential oils in the first trimester and to use half the amount of essential oils you would normally. Most essential oils that are considered safe are safe in pregnancy as far as we know when used properly yet we still act with extra caution during this very sacred time in a woman's life. Also, a drop Neroli is strong to begin with- more so than say a drop of Lavender...and pregnant women can be ultra sensitive to scents as well as a higher sensitivity with their skin. Neroli is uplifting and comforting- a lovely, lovely oil. Note: Not everyone likes Neroli. The best blend for someone is one they love- so by all means, check it out with them.
