Also, are nuts included in the 'fruit' catagory? The following info might help you decide about nuts ... http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mveggie.html a nut is, in botany, " a dry, one-seeded, usually oily fruit. " True nuts include the acorn, chestnut, and hazelnut. The term nut also refers to any seed or fruit with a hard, brittle covering around an edible kernel, like the peanut, which is really a legume. > I was thinking that because palm kernel is from a species different > than the one that produces coconut, it would be ok. But its from the kernel of the palm fruit ... so that might not be good for her. > I also thought of > adding sunflower and safflower oils. I know shortning and lard are ok > to use. Those do sound like your best bet. > Any and all help is greatly appreciated here! I tried a bit of > research online to try to determin which is considered fruit or not, > and frankly--came up rather short on the subject! Seeds that aren't from fruit sound like a good possibility, but grains are actually considered fruit according to that link I gave you above. Kernels and pits come from fruits, and nuts are definitely considered fruits, so it seems that it'd be best to stay away from those. > I'd really like to do some soap like this soon! Sounds like she's getting a tallow based soap. <grinz> Seriously though, tallow makes a good soap. Only reason I don't use it is that much of my customer base requests vegetal based products. > thanks-- Happy soaping > goody *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com
