Guest guest
Hi, and thanks to all who responded. (and to those of you who called me out of lurkdom, I'll be back as soon as I can get this baby to sleep!) The mastitis has resolved after a few scary days. I COULD NOT get that plug out. Finally, I had to take the tylenol 3, get into the hotest bath I could stand, and physically squeeze that plug out of the swollen glands. It wasn't pretty, but it sure worked. Ugh. Now, I'm pretty sure we have thrush. She doesn't have anytihng going on in her mouth, but we have had white blisters that appeared, scabbed over, then fell off, and now sharp, deep breast pain with burning nipples. In short, it quacks. I'm taking acidophilus, and I called my DR, but she just recommends treamtent with nystatin in the baby's mouth, and on the nipple... meanwhile everything I read says oral fluconazole - anyone with any insight? And I'm going to start using vinegar rinses, but any other home treatment ideas are welcome. <sigh> I'm not sure how we survived as a species when breastfeeding is this hard. Thanks, JenB

The dr recommended that I clean the nipple and breast area with hot water. NO SOAP!! the soap, no matter how it is made, will dry out the delicate skin, and sometimes even miniscule residue can aggrevate the thrush. My daughter was put on amoxacillian and it cleared up in a few days. HTH!! MIchelle

That stinks Jen. I have had it a few times, as well as many of my clients. I personally avoid vinegar. Vinegar actually feeds the yeast, can cause it to become dormant, only to resurface later. There is Gentian Violet which is a lovely deep purple, but as a topical has worked for many moons. I have also heard good things about GSE for thrush. I personally up my intake of bifidophilus ( I take a blend called threelac), vitamin C, and a herbal candida blend I use. Babies can safely take lactobaccilli as well as bifidophilus. Nature's way has an easily assumable powdered bifi for infants. It is all about yeast imbalance. If you can be vigilant about it and kick it, you will thank yourself years later! HTH! Guest guest
Hi JenB- Ok. Regarding the blisters. Many women get white blisters that are not thrush ... they can be from a number of things - everything from dried milk to a friction bluster from a poor latch (me! me!). While you consider the treatment for thrush, keep in mind that there are other things that can cause the pain you are having. I say this because I was treated for thrush for 8 weeks and NEVER HAD IT. I was misdiagnosed by an LLC and my GP and OB just trusted the LLC. Another LLC and a LLL leader straightened me out. I'm not a diagnostician and you may very well have it, but I wish someone had helped me sooner. In my case the nipple burning was caused by a poor latch and the nipple whiteness, nipple pain and breast pains were caused by Reynauds and fibromyalgia. The nipple pain from a poor latch can be described as " biting through leather " pain. I used to clench my teeth on a hair brush handle! Here's a question for you. Your stabbing breast pains, when do they happen? When nursing? Or is it at random times, like getting out of the shower or in the market in the frozen foods section? And a weird one, do you have poor circulation in your fingers & toes? I ask this because there is a condition with Reynauds that causes pain in extremities when cold. And women with Reynauds can have breast and nipple pain during nursing ... especially in an air conditioned room or when letting their breasts " get air " as we are told to do when we have sore nipples. This is a piece of cake to treat - let me know if you want more info ... if your fingers hurt when you pick up a can of frozen orange juice, this could be your problem. The nipple pain from this is also described as " biting through leather " pain ... mine went clear through to my shoulder blade like an ice pick. As far as the fibromyalgia, it can cause deep, stabbing breast pain. I use vitamins to alleviate it. LMK if you want more info. Now, assuming it IS a candida issue: Please check out Dr. Jack Newman's info - very helpful ... _http://www.breastfeed-essentials.com/thrush.html_ (http://www.breastfeed-essentials.com/thrush.html) _http://www.kellymom.com/newman/c-candida_protocol.html_ (http://www.kellymom.com/newman/c-candida_protocol.html) _http://www.kellymom.com/newman/06gentian_violet.html_ (http://www.kellymom.com/newman/06gentian_violet.html) More info on fluconozole _http://www.kellymom.com/newman/20fluconazole.html_ (http://www.kellymom.com/newman/20fluconazole.html) Regarding the fluconazol I have one BIIIIIG old word of warning ... try EVERTHING before you try the internal fluconazole. My saga, short version: It was thought that I had thrush. I ***wanted*** nystatin but since babe had no symptoms, her pedi refused. I tried gentian violet w/no luck so went to MY md for fluconazole. I had taken it **many** times for other (ahem) issues with no problem so it seemed like the easy thing to do. Well, for (ahem) other issues, the dose is one or two pills. For thrush, my MD put me on it for a week. Apparently, however, it is a very strong, very reactive, very loooooong lasting drug and long story short, I developed a severe allergic reaction to it and needed 2 weeks of PREDNISONE to bring down the reaction. Prednisone!! While nursing!! Apparently while this isn't super common, it does happen. So try the other methods first. I'm sure you're aware of it but cutting back on dairy, sugars & fruits helps some folks. I'd be happy to answer any addl questions as well ... I was just lucky my LLC had run across a Reynauds article a month before ... she'd never come across it in her training at all! Best wishes and good luck. After all I went through, I'm still nursing and my daughter will be one next week. I can't emphasize this enough but IT GETS BETTER!! HONEST!!
