My bug away blend has a bunch of good things in it, but I REALLY like using Lemon Tea Tree to both blend with and mellow out that catnip scent, and also it is great at keeping away the biting bugs! I also like to add Atlas Cedarwood, Turkish Pennyroyal, Geranium, Lavender, etc ... > The trikier and more important question is what per centages of these > oils to use. Make a nice blend that you like the scent of with those oils and then dilute the whole shebang to 5% and you should be fine. Dilute it more if you're going to use it for kids, and if you're just going to make a spray for your clothes, then you can make it more concentrated. > Thanks bunches! Lemon Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) has been proven to be a relatively effective repellent against skeeters and various other 6 laig critters .. its an effective addition to the Catnip (Nepeta cataria). > So, my questions are this: First the easy one, what other EOs would you > folks recommend for blending? See above. > The trikier and more important question is what per centages of these > oils to use. I'd use 3-4% Lemon Eucalyptus .. as for how various folks would react to such a blend .. there are no tests I am aware of .. but I would not be afraid to use it on a loved one who did not have sensitive skin. On the other hand .. repellents do not have to be put on the skin .. they can be used on the clothing .. the purpose of the repellent is not to gag the maggot off the gut wagon .. its to mask your odor .. make the 6 laig confused where it doesn't hone in on you. A good carrier for this blend would be Fractionated Coconut .. see the next post .. a rerun from 11 May 2005. There are many new members on the list now who haven't seen it. > Thanks bunches! Guest guest
Does anyone know if Lemon Tea Tree is ok (of course in very dilute quantities) for dogs? I know that Tea Tree oil is contradicted in cats/puppies/toy dogs but I have used it very sparingly on med/large dogs successfully. Would like to add some to my flea/mosquito spray for dogs also Atlas Cedarwood. I do use ClarySage/Lemon/Peppermint/Citronella and would like to add a touch of LemonTeaTree and Atlas Cedarwood. anne My bug away blend has a bunch of good things in it, but I REALLY like using Lemon Tea Tree to both blend with and mellow out that catnip scent, and also it is great at keeping away the biting bugs! What if I wanted to blend some other EOs, like mabe lemon tea tree (which, I believe has also been shown to be effective) or geranium for ticks? What's the *maximum* EO concentration I could use in such a product? > A good carrier for this blend would be Fractionated Coconut Yup, that's what I was planning to use. As always, thanks for your wonderful advice, Butch. Roxanne p.s. I was looking for your skeeter repellent on your website, but didn't see it . . . did I just miss it or is it only available from your store in MD? Hi Chris, OK, so you're saying the *total* concentration of EOs shouldn't be more than 5%, am I correct? Does this render the Catnip EO less effective? I thought it should be used at 5%. How much more should it be diluted for kids? I know, I know, I'm just so durned full of questions!! LOL! Thanks for your recommendations, Chris. You mention many of the Eos I was planning to use.
