It hurts, but it does work. Make sure you massage the entire breast with your other hand while expressing. It helps move the infection down and out. Guest guest
My midwife made these suggestions to me when I had mastitis- and it has worked like a charm. I had it a few times with my third- I was just a little run down!! I never took antibiotics for mastitis and had full blown with fever, chills, etc- The first thing I did was to go to bed. I was drinking 1T of raw apple cider vinegar in a quart of tepid water- as much as possible- along with other fluids. 2-3 quarts per day. KEEP NURSING on the affected breast or at the very least PUMP that breast. Echinacea tincure- 15-30 drops every 15 minutes until it is less acute, then every couple of hours, then 3-4 times a day for a week. Drinking fresh ginger tea helps to disperse the fever, and move the infection out. I took a bath and hand expressed- it hurt but it helped to release the plugged duct. Guest guest
OH, I feel for you -- I was posting in desperation almost 6 months ago for the very same problem -- 2 rounds of it, 103 fever, pain, yuck! Now, let me ask you about the white at the tip -- is it patches, b/c that may indicate thrush on top of everything else. What happened with me is I has nipple vasospasms, which turns the nipple white b/c the circulation is cut off. It is really painful, so on top of the mastitis doubles your pleasure -- NOT! But the spasms do go away when the mastitis does, at least it did for me. It stays a bit, but not as painful. If it is thrush, the antibiotics are causing it/making it worse, and you need to take care of that ASAP. Check baby's tongue and see if she has any white patches. If you want any more info about either of these, holler and I'll post some links for you, b/c either or both of these will contribute to your pain considerably. I have gotten clogged ducts a few times since and have been able to unclog them by wearing a thermocare neck pack wrapped around my breast for the 8 hours. When the baby eats, it drains so much more easily than when I was hotpacking. I also took lecithin, which is supposed to help, not sure if that is what did it or not. BTW, Stella is adorable -- that is one of the girl names we were considering b/c my MIL is Estelle. But we have a little Owen instead! :-) Congratulations to you, and it does get better -- honestly! I had trouble believing it at the time, especially when I got mastitis for the 2nd time, but it really will be smooth sailing eventually. nsorcel wrote: > Help! any other things to try? You can take a cabbage leaf and soften it slightly by ironing it with a cloth over it- some people steam it slightly or simply use it as is and the warmth of your skin will soften it. Put it on the breast tissue- tucked inside a bra. It will quickly soften things up and make you more comfortable. You will smell like cabbage, but it works. Besides that SLEEP as much as you can, keep nursing as much as you can, and boost your immune system with nutritious foods and herbs. I'd use a good quality echinacea tincture too. There is a tonic of garlic, ginger, horseradish, raw cider vinegar, and cayenne (taken internally) that works well in addition to the echinacea for fighting infections (and anti inflammatory) that I'd also use- I can give you the recipe if you like- it's easy to make. The cabbage leaf will give the most immediate relief I know of. You may also need to use a warm compress or bath before nursing or pumping. Yes, there are essential oils that I would add with some salts to relax. Also, if you are nursing a new baby you may want to have a lactation consultant see you (could be someone from LLL) and help to make sure your latch and position is good. Avoid sugars and other foods that don't support your immune system. Rest. Guest guest
You could always try baked potatoes, as hot as you can stand them, that may help... Guest guest
Get in the shower several time a day and let the hot water run under your armpit as you massage from under the armpit toward the breast. Just nurse off the other breast first and milk should let down from the infected breast and then you may be able to express it. Has this problem myself once. I remember how painful it was. Also please go asap to www.susunweed.com and find the forum, you will get all the help you need re using herbs etc. anne Help! any other things to try? Guest guest
take a couple of the outer leaves from a head of cabbage, bruise them slightly (I smacked them with the handle of a butter knife a few times) and put in both cups of your bra. Sounds crazy, but works great. Wish you could have seen my daughter's face when she complained about the pain and I came out of the kitchen with 6 cabbage leaves and told her to put them in the bra !!! That might also be part of the reason she calls me a witch doctor LOL Paula .......... in Michigan Help! any other things to try? I'm on anti-biotics and tylenol 3 (yes, the pain is that bad....) Guest guest
Oh Jen, sorry to hear you have this (((hugs))) Your baby is geeeorgious! Love the cam too! I had mastisis many many moons ago. I think breast pads with plastic lining caused mine, happened twice when I ran out of the wonderful 100% cotton pads. I hope you get better soon. ~Pamela On Behalf Of nsorcel Friday, May 27, 2005 2:32 AM Help! Mastitis!!!!! Help! any other things to try?
