Hi Chris, I favor organic grape spirits and organic grain spirits for complex blends and certain kinds of oils. I also have lot's of (diluted in alcohol) absolutes, tinctures, concretes, and essential oils that I dilute in alcohol to be able to use them in a perfume with more precision. It does not work to ix the alcohol dilutions with an oil based liquid or solid perfume. For many years I avoided making purely aesthetic perfumes. I made wonderful smelling blends and " anointing oils " but the intent was aromatherapy rather than perfumery. It's great to draw from the knowledge of essential oils, safety and synergistic blending we have in aromatherapy and to actually let loose and create art for art's sake. Working on a complex alcohol based perfume in alcohol is like working on a large stretched canvas with oil paints- working with really fine bases and aromatic materials takes me back to the days of blending pigments and base mediums and using handmade brushes. Heaven. My background is in art and it feels so much like the same deep spacious exploration/ process making perfumes with an oil base. I think there are many parallels with other art forms too- music composition, culinary arts, etc. I would not give up oil based perfumes for a moment, but there are more limitations. They are so beautiful though and the perfect medium for many blends. Simpler blends in general. I usually use between 6 to 8 materials max (absolutes and essential oils) in an oil based blend. In an alcohol based perfume- it might be as many as 30 and it may take months for the perfume to mature fully and be complete. Tweaking until it is just so. Perfumery (obsessiveness) has changed my simpler blends too- and my body and bath blends. I'd say it has also changed my aromatherapy blends. I can not work with alcohol everyday. It's too harsh. It makes me ill to sniff alcohol (with essential oils) for hours on end. Not a great idea to over do the sniffing of essential oils anyway, but the alcohol alone is rough on the body. When I create an alcohol based blend much blending takes place in my head and on paper before I begin to actually blend and sniff. I also love making solid perfumes too and perfumed balms.. and room sprays, lol. My bath salts have also changed and become heavily influenced by perfume. It's hard not to want to constantly improve on formulas and combine great body bases with great scents. Well, that was a long answer! The short answer is Jojoba oil and Grape Spirits are my faves for liquid. I LOVE solids and balms for their longevity on skin and the lushness and luxury of the medium. I'm just starting to experiment with making alcohol based perfumes, and I bought some grain alcohol to start. I also am looking for a place to buy perfume bottles.
