Guest guest
Okay, all you technologically advanced folks... I'm thinking of getting a PDA. If you have a PDA (Palm, Zire, Tungsten), would you share with me what you have, why you picked it, and why you like it? Any other comments, observations, etc would be great, too. Thanks! Guest guest
I have the garmin iQue 3600. it also has gps with it. It's not just direction finding, it is sort of a yellow pages as well. I had the handspring treo 90 and I really liked that. But I wanted one that had gps too... I move a lot and have a horrible sense of direction. There is a new version of the iQue that has more of a computer type operating system, mine is palm powered. Guest guest
I come from the town that invented the Blackberry (nerdy millionaires everywhere). I don't have one but everyone else seems to. I have played with one and I loved it. It it really user friendly. Warning: It can be highly addictive thus earning the nickname 'crackberry'. " Karen M. I have had Palm Pilots in the past. I upgraded to the Jornada just because it was a sale too good to be true. I got the old body style sell outs when they changed to the newer chrome look. I constantly use mine for addresses and appointments. Mine has the ability to do wireless, but I have never had a need for that. I also have the ablility to use Word and Excel and other programs that have no use for me on the PDA at all. So I would suggest that you can trim costs by just getting the features you will use. I have the color screen and it is ok until you try to see it outside. there are brightness and contrast adjustments, but even with that, you cannot see the screen unless you go into a shaded area and even then it is tough. I would have preferred the old screen on the original palms as it was easier to deal with outside. If you are going to be using it primarily indoors, then the color screen is very nice. When you do get a PDA make sure you are religious with backing up your information onto your computer. I have never had an issue with any of my PDA's crashing, but have heard from others that this can happen. Once you get used to using your PDA you will become totally depedent on it and losing that information would be AWFUL! Hope this helps and good luck with your search! Guest guest
Well, I am a geek. Born and raised. : 0 I originally started using PDAs when I was living and working in Valley of the Geeks (Silicon Valley) and working both full time for a company and on the side doing websites freelance. The PDA was easy to bring with me wherever I went and I could keep track of all my different projects, plus use it for my address book, grocery shopping (nope, didn't get a single second glance when using PDA for grocery list, in fact, most fellow nerds got this light bulb look like 'why didn't i think of that?'), laundry lists, what to bring for snowboarding weekends at Lake Tahoe (the only way I kept my sanity living in a place where its " normal " to walk around with fake star trek communicators on your belt, next to your cellphone and pager, and be seen actually USING THEM (and i'm not talking about KIDS either. These were full grown nerds))) , etc. Now that i'm a work from home mom, i mainly use it for an address book, to remind myself when to bill my clients and/or try to bilk them for more money, or whenever I HAVE to right down my current greatest idea when i'm away from home. I still have that list of what to bring on snowboarding vacations, even though I have moved to within spitting distance of a mountain, but I have added " diapers, teddy & blanky, (toddler) toys, sippy cups, toddler forks & spoons, ... " to it ; ) I originally had a Palm III and killed it within a year -- so whichever one you get, KEEP THE RECEIPT AND TRADE IT IN on day 364 of the warranty!! When i was picking out my PDA the palm 5 had just come out and all the sales people at my office said it was incredibly sexy (then they pointed out that I didn't need a PDA to be sexy ... and i turned BRIGHT RED but then immediately thought, yeah, you dork, if i want to be sexy i go to the GYM). .... But i knew i didn't know 30,000 people and probably never would so why would I need that much of a PDA? when the PalmIII died, i replaced it with a Palm IIIc and have been happy with it for 4 years now! I have no idea if the Palm III line is still available, but it has more features than I really have ever used. I highly recommend a rechargeable battery and cradle that can both recharge and backup/connect to your computer. I am pretty sure that all new PDAs have these features now, but thought I'd mention it in case you decide to look at used ones. Whichever one you pick, be aware that PDAs can get viruses too so if you download email to it and/or use it for wireless internet make sure you get a virus scanner that can scan your PDA too (or make sure the pda comes with a virus scanner). If you do not get a PDA specific virus scanner then NEVER use it for email or internet. and as Elaine mentioned, backup backup backup. HTH ~Bonnie PS: what does " TAN " mean? as much of a dork as I am, i've never seen it in a subject line before!
