i hate to take up list space, but i have a problem.

yesterday, our female quarter horse kicked the

bottom front 2 teeth out of our geilding's mouth.

she had to have landed that hoof just right to do this.

he's not, well he just won't let us give him a shot of penicillin

at all. i'm concerned about infection as he is still trying to

graze and i am afraid that if dirt and grain get in the open

wounds, we could have some major problems.

if there is anyone on the list that could help us out here,

i'd appreciate it. my email is echo7c

if anyone can offer some help and so as to not hold

up the list, private messages is probably best.

thanks,

Hi Deb. I am not a vet, but I am a fellow horse owner! First off,

I would suggest a vet if your horse seems to be in great distress.

If you want to try treating on your own, for a natural antibiotic,

see if you can get your gelding to eat some garlic. If he won't eat

crushed cloves, then get some granulated garlic and see if you can

get him to eat it top dressed on his food.

You didn't say if he was being fed hay or was on 100% pasture. If

he is only on pasture, you might want to supplement him in with hay

until he heals. Those bottom 2 teeth are his tearing teeth that he

uses to rip grass up from the ground. Watch him to make sure he is

able to cope without them and supplement in his diet accordingly.

You said he won't let you give him a shot. Will he let you treat

the wound at all? If so, get a basting syringe and mix up a batch of

water with some type of oil that has antibiotic quality to it, and

flush out the wound. I know that collodial silver also has

antibiotic properties but I have not used it. If you use an oil,

make sure that you dilute it well so as not to sting the wound. You

can also get some loose herbs and make a decoction to use in the

syringe. Peppermint and Oregano are the ones that come to mind

first, but again, if using the oils, don't make it too strong at

first!

Keep a close eye on the area and make sure you watch for any signs

of infection. Also, I am on the fence regarding vaccinations but

you might want to consider tetnus if you don't have him current.

Suggestion only, you need to do what you feel is right!

I hope this helps!
