Guest guest
Fascinating! I don't even know how I feel about the idea of human liver genes in rice. But I do have an opinion on the following statement (emhasis mine) But he and other scientists caution that IF the gene were to escape to wild relatives of the rice it could create particularly vicious superweeds that were resistant to a wide range of herbicides What do they mean, IF? Turn that into WHEN. Guest guest
Hey Chris, > Looking at it in a non-emotional and logical fashion - I think we're > creating more problems than we're solving - Maybe .. but the problems being created are hypothetical .. they have not come home to roost .. and might not come home. The problems that an increase in yield can solve are realistic .. and having seen poverty in many countries (I'm not talking about po folks .. but starving folks) I believe that filling the belly with GM foods is more advantageous than seeing swollen bellies from malnutrition of starvation. > and in the end, money and greed is the reason behind it all - Money is the normal motivation for industry .. for commerce .. for the Capitalist system .. and for the Socialist system. Money made by the corporations keeps folks employed. Sometimes greed is a driver behind the desire for profit but it's more on an individual level than it is on a corporate level. Corporations have no minds of their own .. they are publicly owned companies (which many reading this will have shares in if they own mutual funds) that are managed by folks who have a desire to look good in order to increase their management bonus and get a higher payoff when they finally leave the corporation. > not the supposed altruistic pursuit, Altruism is something I have always found to be suspect. Even those who some might consider as being martyrs .. those with a Mother Theresa complex .. generally have personal reasons for choosing that lifestyle. Rarely is their behavior (in my opinion) merely motivated to helping others .. it is often motivated by a desire to make ones own self feel justified, sanctified, validated and so on. Martyrs help far fewer folks than do corporations. > by the companies doing the genetic modifications, of a " chicken in every > pot " (or a full rice cooker in every hut) ;-p That has been the promise of all social and economic systems since man learned how to control other men without killing them. Killing those who you want to serve you reduces the amount of taxes collected. > Crazy crap going on - no doubt! Yep .. and it ain't gonna git not better methinks. There is a song that goes something like .. " Money, money, money .. its a rich man's world! " > *Smile* > Chris (list mom) I am smiling .. sucking down a few Malibus with fresh squeezed orange juice .. trying to forget the bureaucratic idiots I have been dealing with today. Folks in mental wards are often creative lost souls .. but those in diplomatic positions are normally bureaucratic A.holes. > One Week Only Pre-Buy Specials: > Unrefined Hawaiian 'Alaea Red Sea Salt > Organic Corsica Helichrysum Essential Oil > http://www.alittleolfactory.com Y'all keep smiling. :-( Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
