Guest guest
Hi Halina, > Hi To Everyone, > Could you please help me with information, as to the phototoxicity of > 5 Fold Orange Essential Oil. I believe you can get many opinions on this .. but few facts. Lemme bounce around a bit on this afore I get to the Folded part .. I need to confuse folks a bit more about Citrus in general. ;-) Whether or not raw CP Orange Oil can or does cause photosensitization is controversial .. cause its not normally used in cosmetics so its not been properly tested. It has been somewhat tested but not as well as they test other oils commonly used in the cosmetics industry. There are variables and exceptions .. like photosensitization being noticed by those who harvest the fruits and have probably got a lot of oil on their hands and/or body .. so concentration might be the issue. On the other hand .. some folks get irritated and get a mild form of photosensitization from the least bit of exposure to some citrus oils (all cold pressed citrus is not photosensitizing) .. and an example that comes to mind is List Mom Chris. When she and her galfriend from New Yawk City visited here Chris applied some Lemon Cologne to her arms and neck. Its a very commonly used cologne here in Turkey .. EVERYBODY uses it .. get on a bus of plane and the stewardess will come by and squirt it into the hands of passengers .. visit a home and the first thing they do is bring out the bottle of Lemon Cologne .. its a refresher and it cools cause it is mostly alcohol. Howsomever .. Chris had a negative reaction to it. First and only time I have EVER heard of that. > As I understand it, 5X orange EO is not phototoxic, however I am > finding it diffult to learn more about this. Its difficult to learn more because there is little to learn once we get past the theory. If we ask ten so-called experts to list the safe and unsafe citrus oils .. be they distilled or cold pressed or folded .. we will do nothing but start an argument betwixt those so-called experts. Aside from the obvious (like cold pressed Bergamot) there will be NO CONSENSUS OF OPINION amongst these experts! However .. there are lots of contradictions among individuals in their own writings. I am not claim to be quoting experts now .. I'm quoting writers. In one place Lawless writes that Distilled Orange is phototoxic and Expressed Orange is not. And when we talk about Orange we have Sweet and Bitter with somewhat different chemical constituents. On Mandarin, Lawless lists it as phototoxic in one area and in another indicates that it hasn't been proven to be so. Some books claim Expressed Lime is phototoxic but Distilled is not .. some say the whole fruit when distilled is not .. and that to me means they are guessing cause whole fruit distillation is not a norm. Some claim Grapefruit is phototoxic and some claim its not. All in all .. I think that based on the chemical composition of various Citrus we cannot determine that IN ALL CASES this or that Citrus will be phototoxic if CP or Distilled or Folded .. SAVE ONE .. that is Bergamot. We can bet out last buck that Bergamot (except FCF) will burn our butt in a heartbeat. What is happening when Citrus is folded .. and it generally happens during ONE distillation .. matters not if its 5 X or 10 X .. is that hydrocarbons are removed .. and we have a product with a boosted oxygen content. They keep longer, smell better and taste better. Plus they are more soluble so its easier to make flavor bases. I have not read that citrus oil is not phototoxic after folding .. maybe it is and maybe it isn't. But then, maybe it is or isn't phototoxic to all folks all the time in the first place. Bergamot is phototoxic .. that is certain .. and I think that it is NOT certain on all the other Citrus oils .. I have heard of and personally know of too many exceptions .. so we can't say for sure. If someone has more info than I have presented here .. I would be happy to see it. > I would appreciate any input on this topic. Folded oils have the terpenes removed .. and the scent and the oil lasts longer. Is it a natural oil? Nope! But since Folding is more often than not done for the foods and flavoring industry .. and in cosmetics, and we see no warning on the commercial products .. it tracks that it would NOT be photosensitizing. > Blessings and (((Hugs))) > Halina in Australia Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com Wholesale/Retail GC Tested EO/Rose Otto, Tested Hydrosols and other nice things shipped from our store in downtown Friendsville, MD.
