Guest guest
Feedback....Here goes, and although I'm no expert...just from a lot of reading<G>...the citrus oils are photosensitive and should not be put in a lotion or leave on product where people will be out in the sun. Also, in my opinion all those oils would cause people like me (fair skined) to burn. Is this the kind of opinion you were looking for? I would not likely use a heavy product like this for this purpose. I personally like something with a light oil base or lotion base on the skin and something water based to spray on areas that include clothing and even hair for serious use in the woods. I make a bug repellant synergy that can be added to any base for this purpose- really because i like versatility. I also make a bug product for children specifically with gentler ingredients that is ready to go in a light oil base- no Peppermint obviously for children. Regarding the ingredients I would certainly not use that quantity of Lemon or Orange as there is no benefit other than scent perhaps in this recipe and the risk of sun burn for a stay on summer product is too high. It's also a lot of Peppermint to use. In general the proportions and the ingredients are not suitable for the product in my opinion. Guest guest
Hi Kat, I think Elizabeth and Anita hit the nail right on the head when they pointed out the citrus oil phototoxicity problems - not to mention that orange and lemon oils aren't really known for their awesome insect repelling abilities - so all around, why bother I also agree that a lighter lotion (or spray even) is generally preferred for such products. All that fixed oil, butter and wax will give you more of a " salve " than a " lotion " . Lastly, IMHO - any insect repelling recipe must have oils of Lemon Tea Tree (Leptospermum petersonii) and Catnip (Nepeta cataria) somewhere in the recipe I personally wouldn't use this recipe as my anti-bug lotion ... *Smile* Chris (list mom) One Week Only Pre-Buy Specials: Unrefined Hawaiian 'Alaea Red Sea Salt Organic Corsica Helichrysum Essential Oil <http://www.alittleolfactory.com> http://www.alittleolfactory.com On Behalf Of Kathy Stranc Anti Bug Lotion Almond oil 1 cup Shea Butter 1/2 cup Apricot Kernel oil 1 cup Grapeseed Oil 1 cup 1 cup of beeswax Melt on a double broiler, let cool and whip the following into the above mixture 1 ounce Lemon Essential Oil 1 ounce Peppermint Oil 1 ounce Essential oil of Lavender 1/2 ounce Cedarwood oil 1 ounce Citronella Oil 1/2 ounce Orange Essential Oil Place into heated clean squeeze bottles Use on exposed areas when going outside . Guest guest
Thanks! That was how I felt, regarding the citrus oils being photosensitive. Maybe it's the salve thickness that is actually keeping this person's bugs away. ;-) Kat -- Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.10.3 - Release Date: 4/25/2005
