Papaver somniferum .. are the seeds that one can use to grow Red or White Opium Poppies. Growing Opium Poppies might be illegal in some states .. hard to say as we'd have to check 50 different laws and the degree of prohibition and/or enforcement would be based on the degree of narcophobia present in the population of that state. > Is this different poppy than actual poppy that is used to make opium? No ma'am .. same seeds. But Opium is not made .. Morphine and Heroin are made from Opium .. normally in clandestine mobile labs in places like Marseilles, France. I won't get into it much here cause it might cause some folks to get their knickers in a knot .. but pure, natural Opium is not nearly as harmful as the West has made it out to be. But .. the West is not the major producer of Opium Poppies .. and there is tight control on the areas that are major producers. Many years ago here in Turkey the farmer could make more profit from selling 10% of his crop on the black market (where it wound up being processed) than he could on the other 90% being sold to the legal available market. This is not the case today .. and Opium Poppies are harvested in a different manner now so it can be controlled. In years past the Poppy was slit .. the gum that ran out was collected on cards and then scrapped into containers. Now the entire Poppy head is cut off .. and the size of the crops are controlled like the Tobacco base farms have in the USA. If Afghanistan can ever get control on the sale of Opium Poppies they will eliminate a major source of income for the War Lords.
