Hiya Evelyn,

I spent 8 years working in nursing homes, 6 of them in one of the best

in Wisconsin. There's a lot you can do to reduce the chances of

bedsores in general once you have the one troubling your mom healed.

I could launch into a long list, but not sure anyone's interested.

They're not inevitable, but can be very common if great care's not

taken.

The #1 thing that can be done to reduce the likelihood of bedsores is

good skin care. When you check on her, make sure her skin's CLEAN and

most of all MOIST and as supple as can be expected with age and

infirmity. Lotion applied to bony parts, hips, back, ankles, the

areas where bedsores appear most, can do a lot to help prevent them.

Giving those spots attention when you go visit will go a long way to

helping her be comfortable in general as well as keeping bedsores

away.

The #2 thing is position changes--make certain staff is turning her

every 2 hours whenever she is in bed! You wouldn't believe how hard

it is to make sure of that some places--I worked in one where we had

to sign turning schedules and I'd find myself as one of 2 or 3 aides

signing the stupid thing!

As for how to help her now, if the staff isn't padding that area they

should be. There's a foam that can be cut to surround the area and

cut out in the middle (a ring around the bedsore) that would help a

LOT to get rid of it. Bedsores come from the inside out but don't

always heal the same way, so keeping pressure off is key to healing

them. Once the skin closes lotion and massage will help a lot to heal

the inside tissues but pressure still needs to be kept off. I'd be

wary of applying anything while the skin's open without discussing it

with the unit's head nurse--she'll know what's being done and what you

can do to add to that.

HTH and if anyone wants to listen to me babble on this, just holler.

Thanks, I appreciate the information very much. She is terribly thin and this

is something that I can do for her. The nursing home she is in is an

exceptional one and only 5 minutes from my house. I see her almost every day or

every other day. They are turning her when she is in bed every 2 hours now.

She didn't tell anyone that she had a sore spot. I kept asking her myself if

she was sore anywhere but she kept saying no. You know how mother's are. Now

that I know it is there I can watch it closely.
