Guest guest
And No, that's not Pain in the Asterix, it's Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy and they held their 6th annual conference this weekend. Thanks to the extreme kindness of Marge at Natures Gift, I was able to attend yesterday.Today I was not, but I wish I had been there! I truly do and I'm going to wish it for a long time. I didn't go because my " THING " (disease) made a hasty return. Not only was I coughing like mad, but I looked totally gross. Bloodshot eyes from breaking vessels due to heavy and prolonged bouts of coughing, voice sounding like an engine with rocks in it and one eye leaking gross stuff. So I stayed home and lived to bitterly regret it. During a pity party I was holding I got out my book that I bought yesterday " Proceedings of the 6th scinetific wholistic Aromatherapy Conference and Read the speech that Suzanne Catty had prepared for today's portion of the conference. BOY do I wish that I had been there because it MUST have been a doozy. For a start she came out with saying that chauvinism is rampant in Aromatherapy, 80% of practitioners are women and 80% of the experts are men. I agree that these numbers seem rather ridiculous, but it was what followed that boggled my tiny, anachronistic, out dated, dinosaur brain. She went on to say that doing what we were taught and going no further was a disservice to Aromatherapy, that we must practice to the full scope of our ability, broaden our horizons and talk openly about what our practices have achieved. She says a case in point is RDT. She said that she had been asked to work on the White Paper and refused as she disagreed with judging or taking away an idea that aromatherapists may themselves one want to adapt or use themselves. Okay, a bit contentious, some room there for either pugnacity or not. Now all that was paraphrased, due to legalities, I can't quote the whole darn thing as I would like to, but I can and will quote the following which personally got my dander up and made me WISH WISH WISH that I had been there. " It was also apparent that the underlying issue that many people had was with the amount of money Young Living multilevel vendors were making and that the opponents were more angry that they didn't make that kind of money themselves, than they were upset about the use of undiluted oils. These are the kind of judgements that do a disservice to all of us and to our advancement of aromatherapy " EXUSE ME? Who the heck has she been talking to? YL devotees? I have heard an awful lot of people complain about the practice and never once say that it's because of the money! Crikey, if that were the reason people disagreed with the practice because of the MONEY every therapist in the land would have long taken up the practice trying to cash in on the bucks. I'm disappointed that she would use this tired old excuse put out by the YL crowd to defend her cause. And believe me it is her cause to change the way people feel about using neat oils. She proclaims she does it herself and calls the technique " Living Embalment " and says that she thinks of rdt another verision of " Living Embalment " , a term that personally gives me the willies, but hey >shrug< she can call it what she likes, point is it's the use of neat oils. She goes on to state that she uses at least 50 to 60 drops of essential oils and sometimes as much as 100 drops for one treatment. She also claims to have used oils neat on pregnant women and infants (one drop on the heel). She puts forth her case of using oils neat, sometimes with apparent pugnaciousness and other times with an out right defensive attitude. She uses her own case studies to point out the value of using oils neat. I don't know how it was presented today, but the actual paper definately has a chip on the shoulder. Whether or not you agree with her you've got to give her points for having the balls to introduce this in such a forum and at the very least she will get folk talking. I personally wish she hadn't drug RDT into it and used it to accuse folk of being blind to it only for money's sake. I will repeat myself and say that it's a tired old YL argument that turns everyone off to her message and/or just plain makes them mad. So. Am I antiquated and out dated? Should we being using oils neat and to such an extent as Ms. Catty suggests? Are those that yell irritation and sensitzation just out of date and out of step or is there a middle ground? And I will say this, from what I heard yesterday, She had a few folk in that crowd that would have stood up and applauded her. I'm just curious as to how many that would have been. She had a lot more to say on this subject, but I gotta stop before someone starts yelling " COPYRIGHT " !!! LOL! Cheers! Guest guest
Wow, all I can say is " Holy Doodle " =) That was pretty ballsy of her to get up in front of a crowd and say those things! I think I'll just continue to do things the way I've been taught...to not cause painful irritations and sensitizations...but hey...maybe I'm old fashioned too. LOL. Hope you're feeling better! -Christina And No, that's not Pain in the Asterix, it's Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy and they held their 6th annual conference this weekend.
